Do you know if they put any UV dye in it to identify the source of the leak?

He did, but said that it was to identify at a later date in the case of a small leak. I don't recall him mentioning any pressure tests or tests to pick leaks.
He plugged the cables in, said that the air con gas was at 0, recharged it and job done.

    Anyone knows the wechillanycar.com people?

For the £49.99 he should have done a full service, leak check and re-gas. There is no way he did this in 20 mins. Get him back and diagnose the fault properly or just ask for your money back and go to someone who does not wear spurs and break the law.

Usually places will put a vacuum on the a/c system - this will often identify if there are leaks as it won't hold it, granted it isn't a guaranteed test as it doesn't always identify it.
But its purpose is also so pull out moisture in the system.

Sounds like they did a bog standard fill and run.
  • this is how i understand it ......

leak test needs to be done first, if the system is registering 0 theres a 100% chance there is a leak, ( system will stop working if theres low or high refrigerant needs to be in a particular range depending on the system ) so no refrigerant will almost guarantee there is a leak which means its against the law to re gas a system knowing this information, i found this out after a similar experience, fortunately i know someone who is in the industry but not for vehicles and after a chat with him who gave me this information i returned to the garage and mentioned i had a chat with another air con engineer and before i could ask he was asking if he could refund me and offer a discount on repairing the leak..... worth having a phone call with the mobile engineer you used.... good luck

What's a leak test and 0 on what system?

You understand it incorrectly, they put it under a vacuum, vacuum is measured in inches of mercury and if you're seeing zero something is seeing seriously wrong.

How MSE of you to suggest op buy a new car. Because that's really the best thing financially and logically. And of course new cars NEVER have a leak.

I didn't mean to suggest buying a brand new car, just a newer one to the OP where the aircon works properly. In 30 years of driving I have never known a car with aircon problems to be properly fixed - doing so is just so time consuming and therefore very expensive. Either do without the aircon, or buy a newer car where it works and then look after it, i.e. by never turning it off.

The fast fits will drain the system and test under vacuum, a 2 in 1 job. A pro will drain the system under vacuum for 30 mins and pressure test with nitrogen.
  • If you want your money back just mention the words DEFRA and Fgas to them

I don't think he did a proper check, he was one of these mobile units and seemed to be rushing a bit, as he had plenty of jobs to do in this warm day.
He added a dye he said to detect the leaks at a later stage, but I don't think he ran a proper leak check. Basically he came in, plugged it to the machine, said that the gas was at 0, that was why the air con did not work, recharged and took off, all in about 20 minutes.

All of this in 20 minutes? I'm sorry, but from what you are saying i do not think he done a good job. A air con system should be vacuum charged for AT LEAST 30 minutes.

It definitely sounds like you have a gas leak some where along the system, running UV dye will pin point exactly where the leak is coming from.
