Teletext ruined our wedding / honeymoon. Help needed please!

Hi All,

So, we just had a complete disaster of a wedding / honeymoon trip to Mexico which was completely ruined by Teletext Holidays. I won't go into all the details of that - as long and tedious as it is.

We've been arguing with them since we've been home (a week) and finally settled on their offer of a 50% refund of our trip.

A big part of what went wrong (among other things) was flight cancellations (which resulted in them sending us home early and us having to change our wedding date)

So a friend reminded me that we could claim compensation for the cancelled flight. I've read Martin's guide on how to do this and logged in to Flightstats.co.uk (which gives an accurate status of cancelled and delayed flights) to see if I can see the reason for the cancellation.

And it turns out the flight wasn't cancelled at all! It took off and landed as normal.

So - we were told we had to leave our honeymoon early because of a cancelled flight and it ran as normal. Gutted is an understatement.

We've literally just accepted their offer of compensation (it will be with us on Monday) but finding out they lied about the flight means I now don't know where we stand.

Any advice or help would be gratefully received.

They probably booked you on the wrong flight and told you it was cancelled so they didn't have to pay to amend it.

So it now means we can't claim compensation from the airline for a cancelled flight...
  • tbh I think you're trying to have two bites of the cherry.

You've accepted compensation from teletext for the issues surrounding the wedding which included the 'flight cancellation' and then wanted to claim again for the 'flight cancellation' from the airline.

Now if you'd found out about the non flight cancellation before you agreed the compensation I would have said that you could have argued this point with teletext holidays and included that in the figure you were seeking from them but you didn't and am moaning that you can't claim twice

But you have been offered a 50% refund on your holiday. If you are happy with that maybe it's best not to stress yourself over claiming for a flight cancellation which may or may not have happened.

any EU261 claim would be against the airline not Teletext holidays. I cannot see how you can claim from Iberia for cancellation of a flight that was not cancelled.
If it turns out the flight was cancelled and you were rebooked a day+ earlier then you may have a claim for €600 from Iberia

Yes that's pretty much what we were trying to do. There's no harm in that if it works but we didn't realise we'd been lied to.

Our wedding and honeymoon were completely wrecked and we've come back more stressed than when we left. Teletext hadn't claimed from the airline for flight cancellation compensation (well of course I know now that they couldn't because it wasn't cancelled) so I believed that the compensation from the airline might be available.

I'm not normally greedy like this - but my husband paid an absolute fortune to get us and his two children to an exotic destination for the wedding of our dreams and we've both been pretty devastated that it didn't work out, through no fault of our own, or the hotel.

Honestly, if I told you everything that went on - you'd want to claim twice too!

The issue that the OP has is that they were told that the flight had been cancelled, came home a day earlier, found out about the potential claim but can't claim as the flight wasn't cancelled (so potentially were lied to for whatever reason)

Yes, we have had an offer from Teletext already and this separate claim I was going to investigate was against the airline.

That's my point - we were told the flight had been cancelled and were going to claim against Iberia for compensation only to find out the flight wasn't cancelled at all. So we have no claim now.

BUt as soon as the compensation from Teletext is in our account, we will be asking them about the 'cancelled flight' and what happened there.

You're probably right! With the 50% refund, we can book a shorter, cheaper trip away to finally relax and have a proper honeymoon and we should forget all about it. I'm just shocked that we could have flown home on the day we were meant to and we wouldn't have had the extreme stress and hassle we endured for around 7 days of our 10 day trip...

But as martindow has saind there's no point in getting worked up about the non cancelled flight claim.

Unless your compensation agreement was in full and final settlement, I would write them a letter pointing out that the flight wasn't cancelled, enclosing proof send it and then forget about it.

If you get further compensation all well and good but if you don't then I wouldn't stress about it but put it down to experience
