  • Depends how high up the cell masts are... If you have one at the top of your building, good job! :D You'll probably have better signal than everybody else stuck at ground level (with buildings to interfere with the signal)... You've only got a few floors of concrete to go through, so I guess you'll have more of a fighting chance. If all the others cell masts are at ground level, that is.

To find out where other cell masts are in your locality, go onto the sitefinder site http://www.sitefinder.ofcom.org.uk/ and type in your postcode, it'll show all cells (picocells, macrocells, etc) for all providers. You can click on the little blue triangles to get a popup with window more info, if you're curious about that sorta thing.

Situated on the 16th floor, even with a base station on the roof of the building, you would get a stronger signal from the next cell (line of sight), because the antennas radiate horizontally not vertically.

  • Didn't realise cell masts transceivers were horizontally polarised, thanks for teaching me something :D (I was under the assumption that they were near enough omnidirectional in both horizontal and vertical planes, except to their rear where they're coupled to the mast. d'oh!)

Any radiation up and down would basically be wasted, so the antennas are designed to radiate horizontally to cover the 120 degree sector. e.g three making up each cell.

Why didn't he use the old modem to download the necessary download? You could not download enough GPRS data in 30 minutes to incur a bill of £196, so something is wrong there!
