I've done a few and they took 1-2 hours each. No data or programmes were lost.
However, do make an extra backup your files before you do it - in addition to the backup you do of course already have. :)
It runs itself once started, reboots the machine a few times, but I just left the computers (on mains power) to get on with it. Even left Avast! running on one of the machines and the update still went on with no trouble.

I've updated several times (and reverted to Windows 7 several times*) and programmes and data have been retained OK.

    * Because I have a Sandybridge CPU with Intel HD 3000 graphics, and my laptop screen isn't recognised in Windows 10.

If you are going to Windows 10 no you don't have to install any more Windows 8 updates.

Because Intel are not actively planning to support the millions of people with 2nd gen CPUs running HD 3000 graphics to change to Windows 10. :(

There's nothing wrong with the laptop screen - it works fine in Windows 7.

This is probably a dumb question as I expect you tried this already... but what happens if you try to install the Windows 7 driver for the graphics? (Perhaps setting compatibility mode to 'Windows 7' on the driver executable before you run it.)

I've run ancient drivers in Windows 10 and had more success than one would perhaps have expected.

Not sure I've tried the specific Windows 7 driver. The problem is that Windows (10) will auto-install the driver it finds. I guess I could uninstall it and try the Win7 version.

Not sure I've got the inclination right now though to go through the update process for the 4th time. :)
