Just what the country needs - someone who can't pass AS levels going to Uni...Sorry if this is a little rude, but the whole thought process that everyone must go to university is totally devaluing further education.

This really does depend on the course he's doing at university. A-levels are great for science courses and in many respects if you can't get a good grade at A-level in science subjects you probably shouldn't be going to university doing a science degree. However in terms of arts degrees such as digital photography and graphic design, it is much better to have actual experience in differnt techniques rather than classroom learning. This is where BTECs excel.
I do think that the idea that 50% of people should go to university is a silly idea. Especially as less than 70% of 16yr olds get 5 A-C grades at GCSE. University is not the be all and end all, at least it shouldn't be and I think a lot of people unsuited to university are being pushed in to it becaue without a degree you obviously can't go up in the world  Despite the fact that the world needs a lot more plumbers than it needs geography graduates (just an example, I don't mean geography isn't worthwhile etc so please don't bite my head off...). I think it's probably about time society as a whole re-evaluates what is actually important - lots of graduates in multiple subjects, or plumbers, builders, health care assistants, nurses...
