Windows 10 trying to upgrade !!!!

My Windows 7 laptop has been running very slow at times for a while. Thre sounds to be a lot of HD activity.
I thought it sounded daft to say it but the problems are usually worst on a Tuesday but can be bad at any old time.
This morning I googled in desperation and came across something I had never heard of before. Patch Tuesday in Windows updates.
Could this actually be responsible for the fact that sometimes on a Tuesday, my laptop is virtually unusable?
I then looked at my update history!!!! Seems that for the past few weeks windows has been trying to upgrade my system to Windows 10 but that each attempt has failed.
I do not want Windows 10 and I did not (knowingly) ask for it. How can I stop Windows attempting to upgrade this. Hoping this might help with the Tuesday horrors I have been experiencing.
Not too computer literate so words of one syllable please in any replys :-)
I did run AVAST and MWB yesterday. Avast found 3 files it could not scan and MWB found around 60 PUPs (mainly related to MySpeedDial)which I have quarantined.
I tried to post the logs here yesterday but for some reason could not do it.
Help please!

A further bit of info.
The programme I rely on most on my laptop is MS Money Plus
I have looked at the compatibility with Windows 10 and it looks like it is a definite NO
If Windows updates does succeed in upgrading me to 10 then I will lose all my Money data. That would be catastrophic for me.
Desperate for help on this pleaseThank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend0 -

Scroll down to Removing the Windows Update tied into the Windows 10 upgrade. Did this on my Boss's computer and it went away! It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
Further digging and I have now uninstalled MS KB3035583 which seems to be the downloaded file which allows Windows 10 to upload itself to my laptop.
Hope this sorts it for me but any advice from the forum would be appreciated. Off to work now but will check in later :-)Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend0 -
Patch Tuesday has been around for years and years .0

Firstly you can change Windows Update settings from Automatically Install to Notify me and let me decide which updates I want installed. This is how I have mine set.
Secondly KB3035583 does not in itself install Windows 10. It installs GWX.exe which causes the annoying 'nag screen' telling you about Windows 10 to pop up every time you reboot. It also allows MS to scan your computer for compatibility with the W10 upgrade.
Unless you actually clicked a button to accept the upgrade, W10 should not have started installing itself, as you put it, even with Windows Update set to automatic. At least that's my understanding of the situation.
EDIT: I should have added that although you have uninstalled that update, MS will simply send it to you again next time your computer checks for updates. So having changed from Automatic updates to Notify Me ... manually run Check For Updates and when KB3035583 appears, as it will, right click on it and select Hide Update ... it will not then be selectable and won't install itself again.... Windows 10 has made several attempts (even today) to upgrade itself on one of my Windows 7 machines but reported a fail every time.
In my case I had actually asked for the upgrade to be reserved, although I had thought I would be asked before the upgrade was attempted. On another machine I have, Windows 10 upgraded at my request, but it actually asked me for permission to go ahead, saying something like, "OK! We are ready to go!"
Thanks to "Oblivion" for giving a simple solution, "change the update settings", which I have now done, as I want to keep Windows 7 on my main PC.

Windows 10 works (now) with Microsoft Money.0 -
Well, as for me win10 is faster and more user-friendly then win7. I don't know why you don't want it0

Money Plus was my main reason but perhaps I need to rethink in light of the fact it may now work with Windows 10.
Thanks to you all for your help.Thank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend0 -
I love the idea of switching off auto updates but scared I will not know which to allow manually. Obviously the important ones but never sure on the recommended
