When I did this we arranged a password with the bar staff.

How does this work to limit drinks per person?

I've used Vistaprint to print cards in a hurry, professional results for a relatively small investment.

  • We did this at our wedding

We set up a tab behind the bar and gave out a voucher on arrival which said something like

Welcome to our wedding, to start the celebrations please have a drink on us. Present this voucher to the bar for a glass of wine, pint of beer or soft drink of your choice.

That way no one could use it against a ridiculously expensive drink and as we gave a ticket to everyone then you didn't have a couple of people propping up the bar drinking the tab while others got nothing.

I worked as a bar maid for several years and we often had people put so much behind the bar and have a tab. Mostly on these occasions they were given a couple of cards or even raffle tickets. But most said that it would cover single spirits, glass of wine, soft drink or a pint. That soon stopped everyone trying to get cocktails.
    It seemed to work.

I know a wedding where they did this.

The venue did not allow outside drinks. So they ordered alcohol I punch to cover one glass per guest, non alcoholic punch - 1 glass. Fizz for the toast & voucher allowing one wine/soft drink/ beer/ single. So for the 100 or so guests they paid for three drinks then you we're on your own.
The vouchers were printed through vista print - business cards and set with the napkins. (It was a buffet with drinks served at the table and tokens at bar).

How does this work to limit drinks per person.

I worked on the principle that those we invited were responsible, decent people. They could buy what they liked on my tab, but when the money was gone it was gone and they had to buy their own. And indeed they were decent, responsible people ...

Well, I have noticed how many on this thread who assume someone is going to be taking the !!!!!!.
Bouicca - I think the difference is that at an event where you issue genuine invitations those you like and want there, you can trust them. Sometimes at family events, you feel obliged, for many reasons, to invite the odd dodgy relative or relative's partner.........

Personally I'd just put some wine on the tables!

When I went to a party they gave everyone a playing card from a pack of playing cards, and said they had to be redeemed by 9pm for a complimentary standard glass of wine or a pint.

  • Thank you everyone. I decided to buy some cheap business cards online. I should add that my parents friends are all really nice people and I really don't think they will take the micky at all. It's just that there are so many people coming I really cant afford to buy more than one or two drinks per person - and with it being a public bar you can't account for other people!
