Waiting in queue for cinema

  • So what most of you are saying is because of the bad contracts and low wages the inertia displayed by staff boils down to apathy.

I come from a different generation and have had some crappy jobs but because I was always quite ambitious I gave each and every job 100% and because of this philisophy I worked my way up to run my own business. Heaven help this younger generation.

  • Sometimes watching the staff working at our local VUE cinema is painful, they take a long time to do everything, and they are young people so should be able to work at a fast pace.

I have always assumed this happens because they are part timers/students on the minimum wage and are on zero hours contracts, so have no incentive to work at a fast pace.

Not all of them, and certainly not in OP's case. My point was that the COMPANY has set themselves up like this, which gives rise to two facts:

    1. They likely won't be willing to take on board feedback if it goes against their strategy (which may be to keep costs low, as cinemas may well be operating at tighter profit margins than they did a few years ago).

    2. You get a mixed bag of employees. Good ones, lifers, forced dolies, students, nutcases, and many more. You can't predict how such people will behave, so one may meet some poor customer service.

You don't need to give 100% in every job you do in order to be ambitious and successful! Also, "running a business" is not the definition of "ambition" for every young person out there.

Heaven help this older generation (ie you)! :rotfl:

That doesn't help at our Odeon if you also want to buy a drink/popcorn because, in their infinite wisdom, tickets and food are both sold from the same till points. So you go to the self service machines and collect your tickets ...... then get in a queue with those who don't have tickets just so that you can buy a drink. Because they are selling both it takes a darned sight longer than 4 minutes per transaction. I now try to take my own drink/snack for the sproglet.

What makes it worse is that the cinema is not even 6 months old, so there is zero chance this system will be changed any time soon.

    Nope it will not change.

System with tickets and food at same point has been in use for at least 6 years to my knowledge, since they upgraded the companies system.

    'Nutcases' !

I can tell you that they get let go very quickly!!!

Why do you think most cinema companies give you a 2-3 month temp contract before offering you a permanent contract.

I like your sense of humour, but your philosophy on life equating to career is a bit skewed. Think about what you wrote and you may learn something about the university of life.

Was this directed towards the mirror, or at me? :p

I wish that I could have taken 4 minutes to serve one customer when I worked at a cinema. I used to run a small-town place on my own and I remember one horrible Saturday morning when we had a new kids' movie starting and apparently everyone had thought "there's gonna be 20 minutes of commercials anyway", so they all arrived about 15 minutes before the movie to avoid waiting too long (which is understandable when you have kids, but). Except that this movie only had 2 advertisements, for a grand total of 4 minutes. This is because the amount of adds you can put on a kids movie is limited by several factors, one of the most important ones being the age restrictions of the trailers - of course you can't put a trailer for a PG13 movie on a movie that's free for all, so out of all the trailers I had, only two were appropriate for this film.

It is very hard to serve 145 customers in 20 minutes when you are not only selling and cashing their tickets but also making popcorn and giving them 3D-glasses (not to mention the other stuff we sold, like candy and breadsticks). In the end I had to run out and stop the movie from rolling before all the customers were in (we started 10 minutes late). I certainly worked for that hour's wages!

Can you just buy from the automated machines?

Not with vouchers from Lloyds Club account, and they didn't have any anyway.
