Council Tenant or Private Tenant?

My status is single unemployed on ESA benefit.
I understand there is a shortage of council housing however I am happy for private tenancy if it has the security of council housing.
Any advise on private accommodation out there that has the security? Is there any schemes/programs that help people like me?
Whats the max housing benefit am I entitled a week?

Where are you currently living, and do you HAVE to move within a certain timeframe?0

Yes Im in my 30's living in Birmingham, single and I like to move asap. Also will I have to pay spare bedroom tax if I get a 2 bedroom flat?0

Chances are you WONT get a two bedroom flat with the Council, maybe with private but assuming they accept DSS tenants as many have opted not to these days. Even couples are struggling to get two bedroom flats.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

all they seem to do is advise a spare bedroom will incur the "bedroom tax" then go ahead and make the offer.0 -
If you are under 35 I believe that you may be entitled to housing benefit equivalent to getting a single room in a shared house in the private sector. If, depending on your circumstances, this is not an option (for example due to your ESA claim circumstances) you may be entitled to a discretionary payment to allow you to apply for a one bedroom property in the private sector.
Make an appointment with your local housing team at the Council to discuss options and place a housing application form in.
Depending on the background to your ESA claim I would suggest you discuss this will relevant support services of available (social workers, community mental health team, GP etc).0 -
In a few years I be over 35 anyway so what you saying for under 35 is harder for housing?
Im in Birmingham so where do I go to as I am a total newbie to this.
I don't understand how my GP, social workers, mental health team will help me get a house/flat.0 -

Let's get down to the nitty gritty so we can give you specific advice.
Where are you living now? With parents? Lodging? Do you have to leave?
What benefits are you receiving other than ESA? DLA - what rate? PIP what rate?
Once we have these answers we can give you more specific information.0 -
Do you NEED a council house?
Private rental will not have the same security.
Do you work at all? (im guessing not)
And where do you live now?
Yes under 35 - your entitlement is that of a single room.
If you have extra needs (such as medical) this can lend weight to your need for housing.0 -
Would not the pragmatic approach be to sort out your employment problems before worrying about how many bedrooms you might be able to afford.0
