LilElvis, The entire transaction was online, ordered and paid for. Although I indicated a full refund, which I accept may not be possible apparently, shouldn't Argos have at least offered a partial refund rather than telling me no refund was possible?

You might want to point them in the direction of their own website which makes it clear that you can, but also they can make a deduction to reflect any unreasonable use.

If the PC has a factory restore applied (reset to factory settings), what significant diminished value is there? (As long as it's not scratched, smudged with finger marks etc.)

The operating system will show the date & time and user data from when the pc was first used. A factory reset will not return the pc to the new/ unused condition.

Apart from that I wouldn't want to buy a "new" pc that's been used unless it had a huge discount.

So you would be happy to buy this second hand unsealed laptop from Argos then? Of course not, no one would, the laptop has now diminished significantly in value.

Something that Argos would have factored into the selling price of all of their goods sold online.
They have probably got a good estimate of the quantity of sold items that they expect to be returned under the CCR's and in the overall scheme of things, it's probably only a tiny percentage of the total goods sold by them.

Plot twist, the OP has recently bought a new phone from Argos and is horrified to find it's been used before.

What compensation are they entitled to? ;)

Also, any data inputted by the OP will likely be recoverable even after a factory reset. Argos will need to do a deep data cleanse on the machine before it is re-saleable to protect the OP's data, which will be at a cost to Argos. They have the right to at least reduce the refund by said costs.

shaun from Africa , Having spoken to Customer Services and I believe their online sales dept, quoting the 2013 Act and relevent paragraphs, Argos in their wisdom are adament that under no circumstances will they offer me any sort of a refund.
I used the laptop for a maximum of 5 hours, long enough for me to decide it was not what I required.
So, where do I go from here?

There is no statutory right to return any goods just because you've changed your mind, except for what is given by the distance selling regs. Had you bought in store, they could certainly refuse to take it back, unless their own returns policy offers the right to return it. Their returns policy offers you 30 days, but this applies to unused items only, not ones that are now opened and second hand.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
