Re. measuring devices for oil tanks, I've had two different float style gauges and both failed after a couple of years so I use a dipstick made from a roofing tile lath which is marked with shallow saw cuts every 500 litres. My wife is a mathematician so she calculated the volume of oil as a function of depth, ignoring slight departures of the tank from the cylindrical shape. Except when almost empty or full it's a pretty straight line. I know people who have had those radio transmitting gauges which give a readout to a meter indoors but they're pretty crude displays ...nothing like as sensitive as my tile lath.

Also how good are the alarms for thefts or is there any security measures you can recommend? I've never used an alarm so can't really comment. But a simple way is to enclose the tank in a steel mesh cage - you can get them purpose designed for the job. The only thing to bear in mind with this - it does mean you need to be around to unlock it when the delivery arrives..
There's usually very little oil left just before a delivery so the cage can be left unlocked with a message left requesting the driver lock the cage behind them. Many oil thefts are from certain members of society following the oil truck around and stealing it straight after a delivery has been made.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Doesn't look like they'll deliver to the United Kingdom unfortunately! :rotfl:

  • SmartUser, I'm sure an oil company in Philadelphia will have very reasonable delivery rates to the UK. If they want to give me a quote, and can beat my local companies, please feel free to PM me :-) Oh, and I'm after heating oil, not spam, just to be clear.
