Getting money off my Visa gift card from Gospendit

Well, I went to asda again and tried to pay for some shopping that was less than £10 so definitely within my gift card's limit - still couldn't use it. The cashier swiped it and then scanned it or something like that. The error came up saying the card number is invalid. That's the same as what happened last time, and they tried all my cards. I've double checked on gospendit and the cards still have the full balance so it's not that they're empty.
I'd be happy to have the balance put into my account but don't know how long they'd keep me on the line with it being 0870, that'll cost me a small fortune.0 -
I have added my gift card to my Paypal account, but it does say in the T&C's that you cant spend more then is on the card, so when I have used it for Paypal I have then bought some amazon gift cards for the remainder pennies..
hope this helps, not sure it will work at self service machines as it doest have a chip on it.
i have regularly used my gift card online anywhere that accepts mastercard, this includes my council tax, water and electric company.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Banking & Borrowing, and Reduce Debt & Boost Income boards. I think the problem is there pressing gift card and not EFT or Credit card. My advice would be to just use them at another shop. You won't have any problems there. ASDA just seem to be incompetent.0 -
Ah, Westie, Paypal! Can you cash it out then, into your account, or can you only use it within Paypal? Technically you should be able to use it in self service because chip and pin machines still have swipe functions but I haven't bothered trying that.
Reclusive, I think I'll have to do that. I might look at supermarkets who stock them, if they stock them they should know how to accept them.0 -
I have added it to my paypal under credit card and then when I make a purchase that is less then the amount on the card, I select the credit card, then I log onto gospendit and check the remainder and by a gift card with the pennies, then repeat if needed,I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Banking & Borrowing, and Reduce Debt & Boost Income boards. A quick google search brings up that ASDA struggle to accept them but others have used them in Tesco, so this maybe a option.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Banking & Borrowing, and Reduce Debt & Boost Income boards. I think all the supermarkets do them other than Asda.
A quick guide for you (I have US credit card so am used to using a swipe and sign card, although it is now chip and signature).
Tesco: On the self service checkouts, you will either have the swiper on the right hand side of the screen or on the new ones it is a black dip style reader (You insert card and then remove it quickly, similar to how pay at pump used to work years ago at UK petrol pumps) next to the barcode scanner. On manned checkout, the cashier will swipe it. The swipers on the credit card machines themselves don't work.
Sainsburys, Waitrose, M&S and Morrisons and Most others: Say your paying by credit card or EFT and use the swiper on the credit card machine (Usually on the right). At manned checkouts you can say how much you'd like to charge to it.
In Waitrose the self service checkouts don't even ask for a signature.
I hope this helps0 -
Thanks, that's a big help, I'll try Sainsburys today as there's some bits from there I want.0

If you know someone trustworthy who also has a paypal account, just pay the full balance of the cards to them by paypal gift. They go through as visa debit cards.
The other person must withdraw to bank and give you back cash (or bank transfer) otherwise both of you will be banned from paypal shortly if they just paypal you the money back. Also, don't spend on more than one card via paypal every 48 hours.0 -
I'm shortly going to receieve a £100 debit card from Sky.
My plan is to pay either my council tax or electricity with it. The monhtly payments will then get adjusted down for the rest of the year. Won't get the £100 all in one go, but I'll get a discount on the bills over the course of the remaining year.
Seems like an easier option than messing around with these cards in a shop.0
