Getting money off my Visa gift card from Gospendit

I have several Visa gift cards from gospendit.co.uk which I would just like to get the money off.
I tried to use them once to buy something in Asda and my shopping was more than the gift cards and the cashier, supervisor and then manager couldn't work out how to take one as part payment. So I just want my money off them. It says on their website you can phone up to get the balance transferred to your bank account. However, it's an 0870 number. I used saynoto0870 but when I tried calling the alternative 03 number, the woman who answered said I had to call that number and that she couldn't help or transfer me.
What I'd like to know is either, what shops can take them (I was surprised about Asda, I thought if anywhere would take them it would be one of the big retailers like that), or is there a cheaper way of getting the balance refunded without calling their 0870 number?

I'm guessing the OP means that their total bill was greater than the amount on the card.
I vaguely remember using two different payment methods in Tesco. I think on their self service tills you can put some cash in and then choose another method to pay the balance.0 -

Indeed. Most supermarkets allow multiple payment methods. You just need to type in how much you want to pay from a card before swiping it. I used 5 Amex gift cards in one transaction without any problem.Mark Hughes' blue and white army0 -
At ASDA, it used to be instead of hitting "CARD" and then "CARD" you would enter the amount (e.g. 1000 for £10.00) then "CARD" and go through the card process. When the part payment was taken, it would take you back to the total remaining and you could go through the process again.
It used to be part of the till training - "Mixed tender".43580 -
If it is easier, you can buy amazon gift cards for any amount to clear each card, via the amazon website.
Then just load the gift card onto your own amazon account.0 -
You are swiping the card instead of inserting it as well arn't you?0

I wasn't doing anything on a self service, I was giving the card to the cashier. I had a bill of around £120 and each gift card had £25 on, I was trying to use three of them. The cashier said the gift card wasn't able to be used as part payment.
I know how to make multiple payments on the self service, I often chuck my coppers in then pay the remainder balance with my card, but this was the cashier at a manned till. Then her supervisor. Then the manager was called to customer services and they couldn't do it. It was rather embarrassing actually, because they just kept suggesting that perhaps I didn't have any money on the cards when I know I do because a) I haven't spent any yet and b) I've registered them online and they show the balance I have.
I don't want to buy amazon gift cards because then I have to spend the money at amazon and I don't spend much at amazon these days, even at Christmas.
I might just have to try them in a shop again, perhaps just go and shop to the exact value on the card, although that will be a pain in the !!!!!0 -
Could you buy 3 x £25 asda vouchers, using these as full payment? Then the asda cards as part payments0

Normally the checkout person will swipe the card, maybe a prompt will show asking how much you want taken off the card.
Before you dfo your shopping ask at customer services if the cards are accepted or can be used as part payment.0 -
There shouldn't really be a problem using them as part payment at all. I worked at ASDA and regularly did payments of that nature.
There is often confusion from retailers surrounding how to deal with these pre-pay cards, I don't really understand why.
The other option is to just split your shop in to separate transactions. You can ask the cashier to stop once the value reaches that of the card and then pay and immediately start another transaction. You would likely get some odd pennies left over though.
Any shop which takes Visa payments will accept them, we do in Next and process them as a standard card transaction, which allows a part payment.0
