to follow this up it is very unlikely that a bank would send out an email to people in the first place, if something was wrong most banks would send a letter through the mail warning people before sending out emails i would have thought...unless it is an online only bank but them banks have a "secure message" system that they message to your account and you see when you log on.

Yup, a bank will NEVER email you about personal info. If the bank wants to get in touch they will ring.0 -
NellyLock wrote:whoop whoop 100% just look at the hover over ip in the bottom, this kinda obv then...
1. if its has https:// and same domain as comp sending then its going to be them
2. if it is a subdomain of the proper company then it could be them
if its a random domain or an ip address then its bound to be a fraud and note the one clever one i think was barclays.biz or something like that...kinda stuck out but if unsure visit barclays.biz and see whats there (if barclays have a .com address though they really wouldnt "push" there biz one)
Well done NellyLock.
I got 100% as well, so anyone who gets any wrong should be careful on what emails links they click on!!!0 -
Got 90% - I had read this thread first and looked out for the "warning signs". I suppose I would class them as being the ones that put pressure on you to act in the next 48 hours for example (I don't necessarily access my e-mail every 48 hours and I don't think banks would place that kind of urgent demand on you without a phone call).
Also, the fake ones sometimes have bad grammar or punctuation (Like Starting Every Word With A Capital... which is incorrect and one of my pet hates!) which I would imagine a large bank would spot before sending out emails.
However..I only bank with 2 companies, so anyone sending out phish on spec would be lucky to get me. It might be a different matter if an email did purport to come from my own bank and the quiz was very thought-provoking!0 -
Thanks Calley, I got 90% but I was very suspicious. Got caught with the last paypal question. But it's nice to do this once in a while, just to see how aware we are, thanks again

Scored 90%, but error was on the side of caution.
I very recently received a phishing email alledgedly from PayPal.
As it happens I'd recently changed some details with them and the email could well have been genuine,BUT, the first part of my email address was incorrect for mail from PayPal. If you can it's a good idea to make your email address for financial institutions unique, I always use that system.

i scored 90 as well, and got the county bank one wrong, this was cos i decided all the bank ones were phishing without even opening them.
If my bank has an issue i expect them to write to me or phone me, simple as that.0 -
Got 50% right but I would ring the organisation first to check!0

Scored 90%, too.
I get up to 15 of these a week, so I tend to ignore them anyway, especially as I don't bank/use most of them!
My spam filter is a "learning" type (Popfile - using a "Bayes" filter), so it has flagged up any proper communications for my attention.
As always, the safest way to check any of these is to open a window and type in the bank's usual URL in, and log in that way...Jumbo

For paypal and eBay emails, you can forward them to "spoof@ebay.com" and they will send back an automated reply telling you whether or not it is a valid email from them. If it isn't they can investigate the source and hopefully do something about it.
