Re VGA cables, I personally wouldn't bother unless you are only spending a very small amount to try. VGA cables can't send HD images, and if the TV you are sending it to is 32" or bigger it will probably be horribly low quality and worse than putting up with the 'small' but high quality laptop.

Buy a cheap DVD player and take it to the relatives along with the DVD?
