Just about to do this and heard that they are 'picky' (surprise surprise.....they are part of HSBC group....!!!!!)

So I've read the advice they offer on information required in the application - they state 'employers address'

Can anyone whose applied already remember how this is asked for ......and what effect being retired with no employer might make?

EDIT: I dont recall ever being asked for employers address when opening a bank account even my (successful..) HSBC Advance application....

Any application that involves credit or potential credit they ask for employers address,

There is plenty of banks in the UK you can go with if you don't like, If you don't like them then why sign up, Clearly you wont be happy with anything they do and will be a constant complainer probably after a quick quid.... compensation for the first thing you don't agree with.
  • not sure quite what i wrote that prompted such a reply ....but any HELPFUL replies will be gratefully received....as always

If you are retired, you cannot specify an employer. I had no problems getting accepted with 'retired', twice, in fact. I am now into my 2nd M&S current account - as they launched their Monthly Saver after I had switched my first account away to the Coop, I had to apply again. I did not try to get a switching bonus for the 2nd one.

I'm sure they will have a facility within the application to state you are retired and have no employers address.

But I think that virtually every current account I've opened recently (which is a lot) has asked for employer's address - it's not unique to M&S or HSBC, it's just normal procedure.

The forms can sometimes be inflexible (e.g you state self-employed and they still want your employer's name and address - in which case you just repeat your own) but I'd think that the form would enable retirees to bypass that nonsense.

Then you should have done that in the first place instead of making a forum thread about it.....

I've (nearly) always found it useful to come on here and ask for experiences and opinions on various subjects and generally found people to be friendly and helpful.

(for two examples of helpful advice see the two posts above yours.)

However, just now and again you get an unpleasant response from someone who feels he has to make a point ......

Just a tip for the future, you can take a look at the application form yourself by starting a 'dummy' application online. Generally* all you need is a legitimate postcode (the one I have is for a business miles away!).

It's even an approach I use on here when researching to try and answer questions posted (such as yours!).

However, you may find it's best to delete cookies before making the actual application later?

    * I say "generally" because some forms require you to input some valid bank details quite early on in the application, and won't let you progress without doing so!

If you have a local M&S branch I would recommend applying there. It certainly smoothed things when I applied.

The branches are very nice - and rarely busy. I turned up on spec at the Marble Arch branch and was seen within 5 minutes by a banking adviser - and even got a free bottle of water and some chocolates!

Not a bad sign at all, completely normal for a M&S application.

Sometimes with M&S you may also receive an email to call them as they want more information.

Yes, sadly, in the forum and out in the real world unhelpful muppets such as paragon exist.
