I think I can't apply as I already have a Barclaycard Football card which I use to pay for my football season ticket - interest free until paid off, which if the promotion continues is never since I buy a new season ticket each year and only pay the mininum monthly amount.

However my mother tried to apply for the card and similar to Voyager2002 Barclays gave her a different card with no cashback. I do remember when I applied for my Barclaycard that they said they would, depending on credit rating, offer you a different card if they could not offer the one for which you applied.

Could it be the whole food and fuel 2% is a con to get new customers from GE and they have no intention of actually giving anyone that card - has anyone actually successfully applied for it and obtained it?

I have applied in the early hours this morning and if i don't get the card i have completed the on-line application for they can stick it  i have a feeling that they may pull this card especially if all the GE MONEY users are migrating, they may also only deal with those that actually have credit and not those that pay off in full every month.

Has anbody ever managed to do that?

I can remember hearing about people who have. It's worth a try. I was refused a Barclaycard and on the letter is stated that if my circumstances change I can reapply in 6 months.

Update i applied on the 21/08/2007 03:00 hrs for the Barclaycard Platinum with Cashback for myself and wife and both cards arrived this morning. Super fast 2 days, and also confirmed that i had been given the Cash Back card before activation.
I'm very impressed with the speed and service so far and that's me sorted when GE Money is no more.;)

I've just been on the phone to Barclaycard who told me that I should be able to simply upgrade my existing card. However, I was told that to do this I'd need to visit a Barclays branch to discuss the options. Sounds very odd to me.

Not really. It'll give them the opportunity to try to sell you a load of other rubbish

Yes, I agree, that does sound odd. I would ring again, and see if a different customer service adviser answers:A. Hope you have a Barclays bank nearby.

Yes, that might be worth a shot. Curiously when I suggested that I'd heard that the only way to switch cards might be to close my current card, wait 6 months and reapply, she assured me that there would be no need for that!

    Barclaycard
I tried to upgrade via Customer Dis-Service and she slammed the phone down!

Cut up the cards and bunged them in the post 15 minutes later.
  • I applied on (I think) Monday night and the card arrived on Thursday. When I phoned to activate it, I asked for confirmation that it was a cashback card as there was nothing to confirm this in the paperwork. I was also able to set up a direct debit to pay off the full balance. Never thought I'd go back to Barclaycard!
