There's another sort of screech you can get on starting - that's the alternator belt not gripping properly, because it's cold. As soon as it moves and flexes a bit, it stops. It can be annoying. Check the tension in the belt. If that's right, it needs a new belt.
But it's a completely different sort of screech - more of a high-pitch squeal, and should be easy to distinguish from a starter that's not properly engaging. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
The intermittent screeching sounds like a starter solenoid problem (not engaging the starter properly). Not serious but needs fixing before gears get stripped!
Possibly the oil was very low and it needed topping up with a couple of litres. If it were using that much oil it's gotta be going somewhere. Puddle on the floor? Mayonnaise in the coolant? Blue smoke?
A clapped-out engine will not smoke "sometimes", it will smoke all the time! Have you seen smoke?
Engine will not be clapped out at 100k if it's had frequent oil and filter changes throughout it's life.
Whatever happens it's not worth spending much money on. If it is smoking or burning oil stick some STP in, the alternative is an engine rebuild and it's just not worth it.
Yes think solenoid is what he said
Never seen smoking myself
Not noticed oil leaks0 -

Re sale value. Cars aren't scrapping for much at the moment.0 -
I'll constructively tell you if you're incapable of something as simple as checking the oil level and topping it up properly then bangernomics isn't for you.0

I'll constructively add that this previous comment:catoutthebag wrote: »Beauty with these golfs I can sell it easily and they hold price or sometimes appreciate slightly.

LOL. Another one tied to the myth that VWs last any longer than other marques, even when their banger turns out to be, well, a banger.
It's a heap. Don't buy a scrapper for near £1000 next time.0
