    Yes you are.

How exactly are they supposed to check the size without opening the package to try?

You don't have to buy it. Thats my point. Nobody has to buy it sight unseen, you can say 'I'm not buying it without trying it on'

You ask a staff member if you can try it on

I don't understand how removing items from packaging is seen as acceptable? Nobody just goes into shops and starts opening things up... though apparently they do!

You do the courteous thing & ASK if it is OK to do so, which I'm guessing the majority of stores would allow, it is however never OK to just assume it's cool to do it.

"If they don't want people checking the tees for sizing then perhaps they should do as someone suggested and have one up of each size"

Most Game's I've been in have limited space, now I can't imagine T-shirts being their best selling lines, I can't imagine them being their most profitable lines. By both those virtues they're not likely to dedicate space to them out in that manner, if they did they'd be headed for a second round of administration fairly quickly. They're a GAMES shop, not a clothing retailer, that's the key thing to remember.

I wouldn't dream of opening packaging in a shop without asking staff first! If want the convenience of not having to traipse back to shop with a product that isn't right then at least have the decency to ask a member of staff for the convenience of looking at it first. Agreed, they could have one out in each size, but if they don't it doesn't mean you can just go opening packaging yourself. If it had looked too small/big you're not telling me the OP could have folded that back up and got it back in the polythene wrapper in the middle of the shop as well as a shop assistant could have done with a flat counter to fold it on? Like others have said, it's just nasty when you see stuff that's been opened by customers with the item just stuffed back inside. It's making a product unsellable.

Actually Katgrit, I could fold it up. I used to design t-shirts so spent time with the printers on their busy days doing, guess what? Folding and packing t-shirts. :p

I was 95% sure I'd buy the product, the only reason I wouldn't is if it was stupidly sized.

Would you be happy if you bought a t-shirt, got it home to discover its far too big and most likely been sized wrong, messed about taking it back and had a sales assistant say 'Well, nothing we can do about it'?
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.
