Game And Their T-Shirts

Popped into Game recently with my son, who had some birthday vouchers to spend in there (£50 in total). He opted for a lego game and a t-shirt.

Now my son is 8 but he's small for his age and the smallest tee they had was age 7-8. I took the tee from the packet when a member of staff strolled up to me. He told me I wasn't allowed to take the t-shirt from the packet. I asked how could I check the size then? He replied 'That's why there's measurements on the packets.' He then proceeded to check the pack and discover there weren't any measurements.

How can you inspect the T-shirt for sizing, or for any faults if you can't remove it from the packaging? How would they respond if you checked it at home to find a hole in it? Would they be obliging and allow you to return it. I guess you'd have to inspect for faults immediately after buying.

Bought the tee anyway and it's a little bigger than I'd have liked for him but it's growing room I suppose.

If the vouchers were cash, or the items had been for me I'd have walked out and spent the £50 elsewhere.

Not many places allow you to remove things from packages to try :/

I can't believe you just took it out!

The vast majority of places selling clothes do let you try them on.

The packaging was the resealable kind, it's not like I was ripping open a packet. You see it all the time with kid's wear, undies especially where the top pair has been stuffed into the packet. That's why they're resealable.

I never buy anything where the pack has been opened and the contents pushed back in. However I do think that the shop should have 1 of each size on display to try against you.

Surely common courtesy would have been to approach a member of staff & ask if it was OK to take it out. Having worked in a shop selling packaged t-shirts I didn't mind when I was asked if it was OK as I'd likely package it back up myself straight after, but it got on my goat when people assumed it would be OK.

Perhaps a little rude of you to assume it was OK to do it, granted staffer probably could've handled it better but you're still in the wrong here.

    Three points to add:

    1. Game are a GAME shop, so you shouldn't expect a top class service in regards to their T-shirt line! It is probably the one product in their store which the staff aren't too clued up on (not least because they likely don't sell many of them).

    2. If faulty when you open the packet then you have rights under SOGA to have that resolved.

    3. Choosing to buy a T-shirt in the "7-8" size is potentially a bad investment to make for an 8 year old who is going to grow out of it pretty quickly. Unless your child is smaller for their age (in which case 7-8 is fine), a 9-10 shirt may have been the most logical choice.

If they don't want people checking the tees for sizing then perhaps they should do as someone suggested and have one up of each size. The alternative is buying the tee, trying it on at home, then taking it back if the size is incorrect. Either way the tee has been taken out the packet.

The simple fact is I'm not buying a t-shirt for my son where I can't see the actual size.

But that's what I am querying here. If you buy it and the sizing is wrong and it's too small or large (sometimes the wrong label can be stitched on to a garment), what right would you have to return it?

Daytona, I did say my son is small for his age, and I did say the size 7-8 I bought looks a little too big than I'd have liked. If they had the tee in a smaller size I'd have preferred that.

No one is saying you have to buy it sight/size unseen.

However that does not give you the right to just go round opening packets.

There isn't really such thing as a 'wrong' size. All 7-8 year olds are not the same size. My wardrobe ranges from a size 10 to a size 16 depending on the shop. My shoes are from a 6-8. There is no standard sizing for you to claim is 'wrong'

If it is faulty, aka not stitched right, then you can complain.

I wouldn't dream of buying a packed item of clothing without trying it on, If you get it home and it does not fit you have to traipse all the way back to the shop and as its a no fault exchange you are only entitled to a credit note and they may not have another size or anything you want for that matter.

    Yes you are.

How exactly are they supposed to check the size without opening the package to try?
