I had the same problem updating a fiends PC to Windows 10.
Turned out to be a failing 2 Tb hard drive.
Ran a Windows check on the hard drive which corrected the errors.

    The update then worked.

Once the PC is running windows 10 you can then replace the hard drive with a new drive and do a clean install of Windows 10 on the new drive. Windows 10 will activate itself.

The owner had been complaining of the PC running slow before the update.

The new hard drive restored the PC's performance.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, how did you do that?

    Check drive for errors.

    Then restart the computer.

Quite a few errors were found and fixed.

    Then try upgrade again

(I downloaded the upgrade on to a memory stick using the Microsoft Windows 10 procedure to download to a USB stick and used that to upgrade from Home premium to Windows 10 Home on the PC which failed to upgrade).

    Hope this helps
