Trying to update to Windows 10 with no luck

Hi,
I am trying to update from windows 7 to 10 with no luck.

I get to a white circle on my screen and up to somewhere between 65 and 75 %, then the screen goes black and just sticks there, with no mouse pointer.

Anyone any ideas what I can do to get windows 10 update to work?

Thanks

  • I updated yesterday from 8.1 with no probs but my screen did indeed go black for short time with no mouse pointer but then the computer restarted and it carried on installing ...took about an hour and a half to complete? Mine said on screen your computer will restart several times? I had black screen with a grey circle with a blue line running around it showing how far the update had progressed in %. Maybe your computer is not restarting its self when prompted?

Thanks for the reply. Yes I did think it would take a while after going black, so I left it for a good few hours (all afternoon) and was still at the same position when I came back to the computer.

I left it for all afternoon, at least 5 hours if not more.

I ended up turning it off via the power off/on button and then switched it back on. It then auto restored the previous version of windows.

Could give it another go? How old is your laptop out of curiosity? And what make/model?

I had the same problem updating a fiends PC to Windows 10.
Turned out to be a failing 2 Tb hard drive.
Ran a Windows check on the hard drive which corrected the errors.

    The update then worked.

Once the PC is running windows 10 you can then replace the hard drive with a new drive and do a clean install of Windows 10 on the new drive. Windows 10 will activate itself.

The owner had been complaining of the PC running slow before the update.

The new hard drive restored the PC's performance.

    Hope this helps.
