What would be the impact on the economy/retails if people stop the waste?
People must love their jobs - to me throwing out food equals an extra x minutes at work, I'd sooner take the time making sure I buy what I need and eat what I have than retire later.I think....0 -
I know how much food waste I throw out each week as we have a food caddy. I think it is used for biofuels.
It is nowhere near 152kg. I would guesstimate less than 500g per week. Almost all of my food waste is of the same type - banana skins, avocado skins, pips and stones, etc. Plus bread. Bread is the food that goes off most here as I don't like it from frozen. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I know - I had to convert for a starter cause I have no idea about these stones and pounds businessbut 152kg per person is over 400 grams a day (and everyday) in spoiled food!!! That is like a LOT!!!
I am also very careful, I throw away almost nothing that is edible. Everything gets diligently used, packed away in lunch boxes, etc.
If we would all (in the UK) stop wasting food I reckon grocery stores would feel the pinch!0 -
Vegetable peelings & fruit skin/cores go in the compost bin so end up making more veg in my garden. My council does food recycling so any other bits (usually bread crusts) go there.
On Bin Day I put out my food recycling bin (~a quarter full), general recycling bin (maybe 1-2 carrier bags of card, tins & jars) and a black liner of non-recyclable waste, maybe half-full. The next door family have an overflowing wheelie bin whose lid can't shut, with 4-6 bulging bin bags piled around it. They seem exempt from recycling for some reason. Being British I just shake my head, tut but don't say anything. They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -
I tend not to buy anything that is nearing its sell by date. With things like bread or cheese, its as soon as the corners go stale.
We freeze our breads and only take out whats needed.
It doesn't take long for bread to defrost.:wall:

but 152kg per person is over 400 grams a day (and everyday) in spoiled food!!! That is like a LOT!!!
does this include what supermarkets bin, I understand they throw away quite a lot.
There are people thatget their food from supermarket waste bins.
I recall seeing a television programme where items had been binned WITHIN DATE because the tins (tinned fruit for example) was slightly damaged.
I think there was even a who case of wine thrown out because one singular bottle was damaged.
I believe this is against the law though, so do not recommend anyone tries this.
I do think it's abhorrent that so much food goes to waste. Surely a sign of over production so with excess supply, there should be a reduction in price to help sell them all within date.:wall:

I throw nothing away. If I buy it, I HAVE to eat it. That's the rules! Zero waste. I check the dates on everything as I put it into my basket - thinking through what I've already got to use up and what I'm attempting to buy .... and if I can't see that it'll all get eaten, then it doesn't go in the basket.0

I don't understand how big these new numbers are. I'll have to convert it to feet & inches.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

24 stone is (24x14 pounds) = 336 lbs.
It's the weight of two "average" people really.... not two skinnies and not two chubbies. Or, for those that prefer, if you assume that babies are born weighing 7lbs then it's like throwing out the weight of a new baby every week without fail.0
