Is there a catch?

Options
Get stopped by a Sky salesman in Asda the other day, and he offered me a package that sounds too good to be true.

For £16-40pm (with no additional charge for line rental), I get unlimited BB, plus use of thousands of Wifi hotspots around the country.

Additionally, for a one off payment of £5, I get a router and setup, plus they'll connect my landline.

Is this for real, or are there hidden extras?

The £16.40 is the line rental charge. At the moment the BB is free for a year so the line rental is all you will pay.

The router is £6.95 to deliver. You set it up yourself by plugging it in to your phone line and pc.
    plus they'll connect my landline.

Have you got a landline currently?

Is just their normal offer at the moment.

No, and I explained this to him. He asked when I last had a landline at this address, and I explained I'd never had one, in the nearly 6 years I've been here.

He said they'd arrange for it to be connected, as part of the £5 charge.

As for the contract, he said that, when it gets to 11 months, I should ring up and tell them I'm leaving at the end of the next month, and they'd renew on the same deal.

BTW. Is it true what he said, about the thousands of Wifi hotspots around the country?

If you look at the T&C you can see that there might be a £20 connection charge so I would be checking that out.

They might - then again they might not. No guarantees.

    Yes it does exist.

So, the maximum cost to set it up, is £26.95?

But, if they don't, I can always leave and go somewhere else?

Or is there something extra to pay (say toward the landline setup), if I leave after a year?

The actual wording is from £20 for a new line.

"Compatible line required, otherwise connection charge from £20 may apply. Set-up costs may apply."

    Yes.

If you complete the 12 months there would be no fee but can sometimes be a cease charge if you just stop everything and don't go elsewhere.

As others have pointed out the wording is 'from'. If you have no physical line then expect the bill to be anything upto a couple of hundred pounds, and a 6 months wait to be connected would not be unusual.

This is Skys current offer for new customer so you would be better off doing a webchat (and save the transcript) or phone them (make sure you record any phone calls) to get a better idea of what your actual costs would be.

There is a wire, running from the telegraph pole to my house, and a socket on my living room wall.

I've just never had a phone service, while I've been living here.

Yes but there may be no physical connection at the cabinet or the exchange. In some cases it's a simple flick of a switch and in others it requires connecting at the other end.
