Showing a boarding pass has never bothered me. It only takes a few seconds. Even if it's a tax fiddle by the retailer, it's not the fault of the minimum wage cashier behind the counter so it's not really fair having a go at them and holding up the queue.

As a regular traveller out of the EU, (Switzerland), I was gobsmacked to find that I am being shortchanged with my non tobacco airside purchases. A year or so ago I used to see duty free prices on alcohol. It clearly stated on the label, which was in a different colour, it was for passengers flying out of the EU. However EU travellers were attempting to buy it and get the cheaper price which of course the retailer said no they could not. I have noticed that airport shops seem to be going for a price that is only an EU price. Less confusion for EU passengers. But is it fair that I am subsidising the EU passengers?
To add further insult to my injury EU passengers have a greater limit than me because I am flying to a non-EU destination that limits the quantity of duty free goods I can bring in!

Surely operating a dual price system at the till which gives the non-EU passengers a price reduction on showing of their boarding card would be fairly simple to operate?

Here is a question though. If you buy alcohol at a duty paid price airside , set for both EU and non EU passengers, do you legally have to show your boarding card because you are not purchasing duty free goods?

this is a bbc story that was aired this morning on the radio
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

I refused at WHS yesterday at Heathrow, I said there's no VAT on the newspaper and it's not duty free, they said it was "regulation", I paid and left. They don't seem to have a free read of the newspaper they sell in their break.

Everybody should listen to Robert Preston experience on this.

Radio 4, 12 august, PM show just after 5.30pm.

  • I noticed at Manchester T1 this morning that WHS seem to have done away with cashiers in favour of self service machines, these won't let you do anything without first scanning your boarding pass, I guess Boots are the same, on the other hand we bought some headphones from Dixons and the cashier just asked where we were going, my daughter bought some thing from JD Sports and the cashier didn't ask at all.

What happens if you don't scan it, or haven't got it? Can you complete the purchase?

You hit the relevant button on the screen and the assistant helps you and then you complete the transaction.

In addition to richardw's comment: if at Heathrow Terminal 5, unless you are buying ripoff overpriced liquids buy at the WHSmugg store at T5 checkin, a few yards before Security. It's landside so no BP request.
