ATM Dispute HSBC +Sainsbury

Hi All
Last week I tried to withdraw £350 from my HSBC account (using a Sainsburys cash machine), I got an error message something along the lines "cannot process your withdrawal please contact your bank". The next day I saw it had been debited from my account, I rang HSBC and was told to wait 48 hours in case in self corrects/ATM balances their machine. This never happened so HSBC today refunded the money back into my account and will be investigating with Sainsburys (requesting their logs etc).
They advised this will take 21 days and if the dispute isn't in my favour they will contact me. I am a bit worried as even though the cash didn't come out could Sainsbury's say the ATM balances? What would HSBC do then?
thanks

If they say the ATM balanced then I would assume HSBC would just take the money back and then the onus would be on you to prove that you didn't take the money (CCTV?) or that no money was dispensed.
Hopefully you're just overthinking this and everything will be fine.I'm a Board Guide on the Credit Cards, Loans, Credit Files & Ratings boards. I had a similar situation a few months ago attempting to withdraw funds from a cash machine (not my own bank's) at the Trafford Centre Manchester. My account was debited despite not receiving any cash. I raised the matter with my own bank who recredited me pending investigations. Two weeks later a letter from my bank confirmed investigations were complete and that there really was an error with the relevant machine and they would not be debiting me again.
That in my experience is how it usually pans out in these cases and the bank account is not redebited.0 -
The overwhelming majority of these issues are resolved in the customer's favour. They really ought to be resolved automatically but when they aren't a manual check of the ATM balance and its transaction record will be done, which is very likely to confirm what happened.0
