OMG - I have just joined MSE to see how it worked as I was told the forums were friendly and helpful.

I'm out of here - lasted about 10 minutes before I read this message and then realised actually it's not a place for nice people

Have fun kicking people while they are down, can't say it's a favourite sport of mine
Apart from the last sentence (which is emotive), the rest of the post was factually correct. Not quite sure if you wish for everyone to be all nice and say what the poster wants them to say, or if you want other users to post their honest opinions.

Without knowing the size or type of the company and your role, it is hard to say, but I would consider the actual action as more serious than necessarily the amount. You have broken the trust in the employment relationship (whether for £10 or £1,000).

Potentially it has cost the company money if the loan hasn't yet been reclaimed in full (not sure if it has - memory isn't great). In my experience, it is the devil's own job trying to get money out of ex-employees, even worse if they were summarily dismissed.

It sounds like a pretty rotten situation, I hope it all works out! Just please learn from this experience.

So if I got a job and took £10 out of the till and gave it back a week later this would be ok??

You can't sugar coat it, you stole with the intention of defrauding a company you worked with for 4 years, now you will pay for it as you are going to have to explain to any future employers as to why you have a 4 year gap in your references, that along with paying it all back.

In my opinion the crime is still definitely worse than the punishment, you are extremely lucky they haven't dragged you into courts/got the police involved, expecting them to not sack you??

How were you even smart enough to get a job in such a big company anyway??

Do you seriously think the police would have the slightest interest in this? Really? What planet are you on, with current cut backs the chances of finding a police officer to deal with this is slim to none in my experience.

I say this as someone who witnessed a crime, called the police and was subjected to threats of physical abuse all heard by the emergency service operator. The operator stayed on the line as she was worried for my safety as a woman in her 60s with a disabled adult with me. Police took over an hour to arrive, fortunately I wasn't dead and was able to give them the car number and descriptions of the people involved. I phoned six times to check what was happening and after that just left it, they hadn't even contacted the man who owned the car to check on my description.

A year has gone by and as far as I know they did nothing.

You need to contact your Union rep.
They would look at whether you intended to get the season ticket but then something (dire in your words) happened that meant you acted out of character because of the stress of the situation you found yourself in. You need to tell then you know you have been stupid but be more sorry than you ever have been in your life - ie grovel to keep your job.
It really depends on lots of things and what you actually used the money for. You need a union rep. They can't stop what happening but can mitigate to affect the outcome hopefully.
  • Just received the letter telling me I have been dismissed with immediate effect. They disregarded my mitigating circumstances (extreme financial hardship).

I'm now trying to negotiate a basic reference (to only confirm employment dates) in exchange for not appealing.

But either way, I'm applying for similar jobs (inc temp work) and hope to be able to explain the situation should it come up on a reference (or at the point of a job offer if a permanent position).

Do you work in a regulated profession? If so the employer may have no choice in what they put in the reference.

I wouldn't use an agreement not to appeal as the basis for requesting a neutral reference - they have nothing to fear from an appeal, and it could come across as manipulative/ blackmail. Instead focus on your previous good service.

Unlucky. Ask them what they will put on your reference and as you say, see if they will just put start and end date and no reason why.
