Vehicles you can provisionally drive

Category : BE
Start date: 7 Jul 2005
End date: 22 Jun 2057
  • Description

You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) with up to 8 passenger seats and a driver with a trailer weighing up to 3,500kg

Anybody know what this actually means? I can legally tow a car then....?

Presumably you have to be supervised by somebody with a full BE licence.

Tow a car with another car?

As long as the car your driving and the trailers gross laden weight is less than 3500kg.

And the weight of the trailer and car on it doesn't exceed the weight the towing car is designed to tow.

I don't think there's an awful lot of combinations that make it able to happen.
I.e when you have a vehicle that's designed to tow a heavy ish trailer, it's likely that combined MAM of towing vehicle and trailer will be over 3500Kg.

It reads to me as the vehicle I can drive cannot be more than 3.5t towing a trailer up to 3.5t........

    So a 1.25t car can tow a 1.05t car........

    Am I wrong?

    I doubt that is possible.

Your interpretation is correct, but what does it say on the plate on the car regards max towing load?

You can tow a big caravan or trailer , with a big car. even on motorways .

You'll need l plates, and a qualified driver next to you

As above. There aren't many 1.25t cars i can think of that are rated to tow a vehicle at 1.05t, especially when you factor the weight of the trailer into it as well.

Bear in mind, to tow legally the car needs to be on a trailer. Towing ropes and towing bars are to recover the vehicle to somewhere safe (i.e off of a major road and onto a minor one)

Dont forget that if your driving as a provisional in that category you need to inform your insurance and add yourself as a learner for that category.

If the towing cars gross weight was 1250kg and the towed car including trailer had a gross weight of 1050kg then yes it would be OK to tow it.

But you need to look at gross weights not kerbweights or unladen weights.
Your 1250kg car would be something tiny that would be well under 1000kg kerbweight. The gross laden weight will be 350 - 500kg more than the kerbweight on average.
