I use open office (free download), compatible with MS word etc, and yahoo calender / email.

OpenOffice isn't fully compatible with MS Office. It's the same for LibreOffice.

Whilst some features are supported, some aren't -- mostly the more "advanced" ones, so for basic use you might not notice the incompatibilities.

I have direct experience of two family members taking up this offer in the last 6 months, one works for the NHS the other HMRC.

I don't doubt it, but just because one trust and civil service department has bought the home use rights, it does not mean all will have.

There used to be a NHS wide agreement that allowed it but that was not renewed in favour of trust specific contracts.

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/07/16/office_delete/

Its down to the trust to choose if they want to pay the extra for the home use program. Some will, some will not. HUP is not free, and it costs the organisation money to offer the program to their employees.

I don't know as much about the civil service, but as UKGov has been talking Open Source for a long time to save costs, so the same may apply, in that to save money departments may choose not to take up the home use option, or even not use Microsoft Office.

Ironically HMRC looks to be the first to move away from Microsoft too.

If you do work for an organisation that no longer takes up the HUP then your license becomes invalid, or you leave that organisation, and you are supposed to remove Office, although would Microsoft ever do anything about it is another matter.

Office starter 2010 (word, excel) is still working under W10 (not sure about the installer but may be worth a try).

unfortunately my laptop does not have windows office and i now need to make use of it. can anyone advise exactly what i need to look for (i;ve seen windows home/professional etc advertised). i really only want to prepare/save/edit basic documents. don't need powerpoint etc.

    any advice appreciated.

This office package works out at the best value (for microsoft office)

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Office-Licence-Users-subscription/dp/B00A2ILUZO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1438772492&sr=8-3&keywords=office+personal

Works out at £12.50 per year per user if you can use all five licences.

Single user works out about £50 a year.

Personally - i dont begrudge them it. You used to pay £300+ for Office and it was out of date in a few years anyway. This way you've the latest updates and the latest version all the time.

There are few features added to Office since 97 that your average user will even think about using, hardly out of date.

i would prefer to pay a one off fee if possible. my laptop is a few years old so I might even see if anyone is selling one with word included in the package.

Try Apache Open Office ( https://www.openoffice.org/)

If your only doing the basics it should be fine, and if it does all you need you will save you money.

As suggested by someone else, Office online may be all you need.

    It's free.

Microsoft Office want to re-verify my 365 Account. I bought the 4-year subscription using a college email address which I no longer have access to. Yes the student version.

What do I do? I note it is only asking me to re-verify since I upgraded to Windows 10 (which didn't work out) and went back to Windows 8.1. Been using Office 365 for 2 years with no problems!
