We keep half a dozen packs of instant noodles in the cupboard to use in stir fry dishes. I chuck the sachet of chemicals, though.

I used to live on Koka Noodles when I was in my last few years of school- In sixth form we used to take turns buying a packet each day and about 12 of use would share the packet mixed in with the free Veg the school provided (Cash flow problems start wayyy before uni)-Not the healthiest of diets, since I'd probably get home late and end up having a packet for my tea. Anyway I ended up really sick and was finally diagnosed with Coeliac disease- noodles are riddled with wheat and Gluten so that put paid to the Instant noodle diet. Fresh Rice noodles are good though, they cook quick (easier to burn though) add veg, meat if you eat it (turkey is much leaner than chicken) the calories only really start to add up when adding sauces. Plus left overs can be put into Tupperware for the next day. There are also Noodles called 'Slim noodles' and 'zero noodles'- they are made from a Japanese water plant and contain '0 calories'. they have a horrid fishy smell when you first open the packet(you have to wash them before use) they cook really quick but are so easy to burn(then they reek) they are tasteless (so absorb and flavourings/sauces you add) and are kind of 'slimy' in texture.

Watch out for the Monosodium Glutamate that is sometimes in those little packs of instant noodles.MSG (monosodium glutamate) is horrific stuff,it's really bad for you ,just give it a google!

Instant ramen style noodles are deep fried so your basically eating the equivalent of a packet of E number laden crisps with boiled water and MSG.
Except the fat content is much higher than an equivalent weight packet of crisps because the noodle blocks have a greater surface area when deep fried.

Clearspring do v.exspensive non fried, no additives, organic, brown rice / buckwheat instant noodles and they're easily found in the UK - buy a pack just to see if healthy noodles are your thing or not.

Then use this site to try and identify a compromise (price, flavour) brand

Look for brands of non fried instant noodles, they're hard to find in the UK but locate one you like and bulk buy from ebay/amazon.

I heard on the news a couple of weeks ago that 32 million dollars worth of Maggi noodles (now that is a lot of noodles) were destroyed because they got contaminated in manufacturing in India,I thought destroyed eh ? think I will avoid Maggi noodles in the cheap shops for a while.

Love these things. The type in packets - 20p come with a sachet you add to boiling water. But we've recently started properly planning our diet to ensure we're eating healthily. Suddenly realised after never bothering to read the packet, how hideously full of saturated fat and salt they are.

My question is are there any cheap healthier instant noodles available. Last time I looked in morrisons they had super noodles in a slightly healthier guise but also in a smaller packet and very expensive for the amount you get.

Or, is there a way I can make them healthier? Is most of the rubbish in the noodles themselves or the flavouring? Could flavour them myself with spices from the cupboard.

Tested by our very own Food Standards Agency and found to be safe. Ditto for Hong Kong and Singapore.

Only yesterday, the Bombay High Court set aside the ban, subject to some fresh testing.

If MSG is so bad for you, why doesn't everyone in Asia have a headache?
