new keys cut wont start engine
Hi there, I've just had some new keys cut and apparently programmed for my x reg ford focus and although they work for the central locking they will not start the engine. i can fully turn the key in the ignition and all the dash lights come on but absolutely nothing happens, not even a little click from the engine.
the guy who cut and programmed the keys says he thinks it could be because the battery is flat but i believe that if all the dash lights are coming on brightly and the headlights are bright when i turn them on then this is not the issue.
i also tried to jump start the car and this made no difference at all although i was surprised not to see the usual spark when i attached the jump leads.
anyway, basically want to know if there is a chance the battery is flat or they have simply not programmed the key correctly.
Thanks
Hamish

The key should have a transponder for the immobilizer, a small RFID chip which interacts with a coil in the outer ring of the ignition barrel, sending a code to the cars ECU.
No (or wrong) chip = no start.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Well if you are sure you attempted to jump start it correctly I think you can rule out a flat battery.
Nothing audible at all from the starter region when you attempt to start it is unusual. I'd suspect the key on the basis that this is the thing that's changed, but a dud or jammed starter solenoid is a possibility.Je suis Charlie.0 -
Do you not have the original key still (if not, how did you get new ones cut)? The simple test will be to see whether it starts with the old key.0

Had a spare key that needed programmed. It could still turn the engine over, the car just wouldn't start.0

Is the immobiliser light flashing rapidly with the non working key?
Sounds like they have not programmed the keys.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

How long did you try to start the car with the spare key its possible you flattened the battery doing that. I assume the original key is lost so you can't try that one.
If you have a multimeter or volt meter try measuring the voltage in DC over the battery (should be around 12v) then try and start it and measure the voltage while doing that it will either be still 12v if its the key or it will drop to 0v if the battery is dead.0 -
So lets ask again, does it start ok with the old key?0

original key is lost. keys were cut by the guys accessing the door locks and then they programmed the keys apparently.
i suppose the main question is whether a battery can still be flat if all the dash lights are showing when ignition key is turned and i can turn on the headlights brightly.
just want to be sure that when they come back tomorrow and claim it is a dud battery i can say that its not and it is more likely a badly programmed key0 -
If the car turned over on the old key but wouldn't start then I suspect you have other issues and it's plausible you'veflattened the battery.
You want 12.6v min really. But there abouts would usually crank, just slowly0 -

original keys lost. new keys cut by guys accessing the door locks and gaining code to cut keys and programme them0
