Paying a Surveyor

We had a survey done last year and had to pay the full amount up front before meeting the surveyor. I think this is common practice and I would trust them.0

My surveyor takes payment by card and only asks to be paid after he's done the survey (but before sending the HBR).0

Our FRICS surveyor asked for payment on delivery of the report. We paid by cheque. There was never any discussion of paying in advance. It was £400, which for London I didn't think was unreasonable.Midas.0

They ask for disbursements up front, plus they hold hundreds of thousands of pounds if your money and have a far greater hold over you than a Surveyor.
I accept that solicitors charge disbursements up front, but as another poster has said, these are charges they have to pay out as part of the conveyancing process and not their fees.
My statement was more aimed at your seemingly dismissive attitude toward the OP having misgivings over transferring a large sum of cash into another's bank account without that person actually having provided a service.
Just because someone is a member of a professional institute it does not make them inherently honest, it just means they have met the requirements of the organisation to allow membership at a certain level.
Check the news, there are plenty of documented instances where doctors, dentists, solicitors, accountants and dare I say it, even Chartered Surveyors, have been proven to be dishonest.0 -
Our surveyor got payment from us by BACS after he had carried out the survey, but before we received the report. I'm not sure I would have paid the full amount prior to any work being done at all - maybe a deposit at most.Initial Mortgage July 2015: £170,995
Current Mortgage: £159,4020 -
I have both pre-paid and paid before receiving the report.
The only time I pre-paid was when organising the survey via the mortgage company (i.e. the mortgage valuer also did the homebuyer survey).0
