Paying a Surveyor

Hello,
What is the normal way of paying a surveyor? Many seem to want a bank transfer for the full funds just to make the booking before the survey is carried out weeks later. I feel uncomfortable just transferring money into someones account with whom I do not know nor have ever met, especially as this is a Building Survey and close to £1000. How do others do it? These are listed on RICS.

Surveyors are professionals, not dead horse and donkey dealers. They wont disappear to the Costa del Sol with you money. They are members of the RICS, a well established professional body, whose offices you can visit at 12 Great George Street, London.
The alternative is not to pay it and then you don't get your survey done.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -

Offer 50% upfront and 50% on receipt of report, but I suspect you'll not get agreement.0

But they will (almost) invariably expect their fees to be paid at completion, not after.
Similarly, I expect surveyors have learned from bitter experience that clients have less interest in paying after they've already got the report in their hands.
Not sure why it's taking "weeks" for the survey to be done though, my past experience has been for surveyors to go out almost immediately.0 -
I also made an offer on a house on sunday, rang estate agents on Monday to make offer via them and had survey done on Thursday!0
