We go on a regular basis to Matagorda, quiet and a few decent restaurants and bars.
We have been regulars to Gran Canaria for the last twenty years over the Xmas period but fell out with it a couple of years ago,the reason was mainly down to the large influx of Scandinavians who have taken over the island0 -
I love the Canaries but apart from the odd excursion, they are just beachy places. I would look at a completely different destination, may be mainland Spain Costas where you can visit some cities for culture & Andalucian mountains or even parts of Greece. Crete is good for a bit of culture & excursions. Or what about Croatia, very popular . Good luck.0

Have been to Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma and Lanzarote. we do prefer Lanzarote but it is a chill out in the sun place - sure I would go bonkers if I stayed a fortnight.
For 2 weeks with interest I would absolutely recommend Croatia. we did a fortnight with a 7 day trip on a boat (21 passengers ) stopping at various places between Dubrovnik and Split - a mixture of beautiful natural scenes and historical sites. We then went to Montenegro for 5 days - interesting but not sure I need to go again. Then 2 nights back in Dubrovnik - it really does look like the pictures in brochures and every time I see the pictures of the old walled town I remember swimming in the sea at the base of the walls. Don't just go for standard brochure holidays - we use a smaller travel agency and tell them what we like and they put it together in a package for us.2025 Decluttering Campaign 648/2025 🏅🏅🏅🏅(🏅🏅) 🌟🌟

I'd suggest Greece for a mix of lazing in the sun and some culture.. Crete is lovely and lots to see!
Depending what time of year of course.. I'm looking at October (either Greece or Turkey) and still hot then

I've been to both Gran Can and Lanzarote and found that out of the two Lanzarote had more to offer! I would go back to Lanzarote no problem but it would have to be a seriously good deal to get me back to Gran Canaria.
Lanzarote I found had plenty to do. We went on a day trip to Timanfaya which included a camel ride that was great fun, we also went on a market trip to Teguise, a Jeep Safari type tour of the island, a catamaran trip and also to Jameos del Agua which I found quite interesting if you visit the museum part too.
We stayed in Costa Teguise but also visited Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca and if we returned I would stay in Playa Blanca.
Alternatives could include the Northern Costas of Spain, somewhere like Tossa de Mar on the Costa Brava or La Pineda / Cambrils on the Costa Dorada. From here you can easily visit Barcelona for a day trip or even a couple of days, Montserrat mountains, boat trips etc and there are quite a few smaller villages nearby too with wineries / vineyards offering wine tasting tours.
Or as some one else suggests you won't go far wrong with Greece. Crete is the biggest island with plenty to offer but I would also suggest Kos as there is plenty of historical ruins to see there and you can also take a day trip to several nearby islands or even to Turkey. Corfu would be another good choice with plenty to see and do and some fantastic beaches as well.Lea0 -
I've been to Gran Canaria and Tenerife several times, but only as a winter sun holiday. I wouldn't consider them as destinations in the summer months, as the Mediterranean has better weather on the whole at that time of year, and more interesting places to visit, if you want a bit of culture as well. We always go to Ibiza in June, but you can't beat Italy for a bit of everything. Somewhere like Sicily has plenty of history, beaches and is one of the best places I've been to. Plus the food is great!0

Me n hubby have just had a week in playa blanca.we love it there. We took the ferry over to feuterventura for the day. Its only €23 return. Playa blanca is a lovely resort and I'm sure you would like it0

We have been going to Lanzarote for the last 8 years and love it.
Matagorda in Puerto del Carmen is a nice quiet area which suits us and you can still arrange any trips you want to go on + plenty of nice restaurants and bars.
Next month we are going to Playa Blanca which is lovely, only time we have been there has been on bus trips to the local market, but many have told us it is an excellent area to holiday in.
We are only going for a week this time (all inclusive for first time), but have already booked up for Matagorda for next year for another relaxing break.
