Broadband no phone

Options
Does anyone know of any broadband you can get without having a phone line?

I have looked at Virgin but they seem a bit of a rip off. Given that the normal line rental is £16.99 a month - why aren't the broadband only charges £16.99 cheaper instead of £5.00 cheaper - what am I missing?

I don't use the landline at all and begrudge having to pay for it. I just realised I am paying £72 a month for phone, broadband and tv with Sky! As soon as my contract is up in November I will be looking to change but I really hate having to pay for the phone line.

You need to pay for the phone line as that's how the internet travels into your house. It isn't magic.

So presumably the Virgin no phone broadband is magic then?

Part of the line rental is to maintain the cable coming to your house. With broadband only you still have a cable coming to your house, so you still have to pay for this part. Each service (phone, broadband, tv) includes this cost, but you only have to pay it once, so if you have multiple services, you get a cut in price.

Non virgin broadband, dont just use the cable, but use the actual phone line as well, which is why you need line rental for them.

The only services that dont require line rental are those without cables, mobile and satellite, but these have their limits, and are often more expensive anyways

Virgin broadband is delivered separately from the phone line. Which is why you can have Virgin broadband without a phone line. The fact that they are the only ones that can deliver this means they can price it as they choose as their is no competition for broadband as a stand alone product (other than slow or unreliable services via wireless delivery).

VM services come down VM cable .
Other ISPs have to pay BT for the line and you use that landline to supply your broadband .

A VM no line rental is built in to the packages .

Current line rental for most ISPs is going up around September .
As they make less money from less phone clls its not likely to stop rising in my view .

You can off course get broadband without a phone line at all .
One via a mobile dongle or using a network package or via Satellite .

Thank you! I wasn't sure if Virgin were the only one that offered a no phone line broadband but it seems they are :(

I may as well stick with Sky and at least I get Sky Atlantic but I will definitely downgrade the tv - I only watch Sky Atlantic and the terrestrial channels anyway!

you could try Now TV, the entertainment pack includes Sky Atlantic, and might work out cheaper. Especially as they seem to do alot of offers for it

Just stop calling it a phone line and call it a multipurpose communications line that can be used for phone and/or data depending on which add-on packages you select. Because that's what it is, and that's why you're still paying for it.

It just so happens the only way to get a multipurpose communications line is to subscribe to a phone line.

VM compensate for it by offering some of the most expensive telephony around.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
