Living on one salary after having 3 children, an inability to budget, buying a larger house (so DS1 wouldn't have to share our room any more!) then needing more furniture for the bigger house, decorating the bigger house as it was all in dark and depressing colours, buying too many toys for the children, spending too much on food.
That's about it as we didn't have holidays for years (recently went abroad for the 1st time in 15 years!), didn't go out, don't smoke, didn't buy many clothes, or expensive make up (I've always bought Rimmel cos it's cheap), always had a 2nd hand car.
Basically we weren't earning enough and then as soon as we got into debt we had even less to live on and so it became a downward spiral until MSE.Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally

I went on maternity leave from a reasonably well paid job, and forgot to stop spending
Then about 12 months later my DH had to resign from his job, and so I started using the CC for grocery bills, Christmas presents and so on.
Then when he got another job I was too proud to ask for money to pay off the debt - I'm finally able to put my pride aside and tell him that i need to get rid of this debt.
So, have I got much to show - not really. But I really think that I've finally learned my lesson. When this debt goes, that will be it - for good!Debt as of LBM (August 2007) - about £4500

Matter of opinion!! Do you know how much it costs to drag race? What with the entry fees, insurance, petrol, racing suit, helmet, shoes..
He has some sponsors so the car is covered with adverts though. Anyone fancy sponsoring a Mustang...??? Anyone.... Don't all shout at once!:p0 -
Ours is a house, when we rented we owed nothing. We had to get a deposit to get a mortgage and that was a loan, the house we got needed work that was credit cards. The money my ex promised never amounted to the amount he promised so never paid the initial loan off. Then I got ill when pregnant we had to cut down from 5 jobs between us to 2, the rest went on food and survival. But the house is still here and in the three years the value has gone up 40k it only cost, ONLY!!! it was a fortune to us 60k.0

So he's not the only one. its not just that there is nothing there, he just can't say where any of it went.

I think DH and I were comfort spending as we were miserable at having 8 year of fertility treatment with no result.
I think we thought doesn't look like we're going to have a baby so lets spend to fill the gap.
So had a couple of nice holidays, meals out and just life in general.

hey you got your baby - well done. you can just sit and look at her now instead of spending! i'm still paying off the ivf that ended in miscarriage so i know about comfort spending:o0 -
Wow, this thread just goes to show that there are real, human stories behind the debt totals - not everyone went out and blew it on cars, clothes and holidays (and even if they did, that's not the full story). Sorry to hear about your miscarriage rovers."I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250

it started with the debt i had to take on from my x husband, then the computer, the car, the tv....
I dont think the cosmetic warehouse i have established at home, because i might need it or it was a bargin has really helped matters.
Then there is the store cards that you take out because of the 10% off that you never get round to paying off.....
Also a rather large sum on private fertility treatment over several years, with no lasting sucess, so the shopping continues to distract me from it.DFW NERD NO.656 DEBT FREE 24TH NOVEMBER 2010 TOTAL DEBT AUGUST 2007 £39000MFiT T2 NO.56 WE OWN [STRIKE]25%[/STRIKE] 31.5% OF OUR HOUSE SO FAR!0
