Changing my broadband deal

I've got a 45 year-old dial-up phone with BT which was installed in my family home when I was 16. (I am 61 now) I don't use it much which is why I have never updated it. last bill for two months was £26.42) But I am increasingly finding the need to verify things etc. on the Internet with a keypad phone, so the time has come. When I checked my Virgin Media broadband deal I discovered to my astonishment that I am being charged £28.49 a month for 20 MB broadband while they are offering 50 MB for £17.50 per month on their website. So I am going to use the MSE advice to try and negotiate a better deal, including a phone. Further advice on this would be helpful.
Also, does anyone know if there is a way I can claim back the money I have been overcharged for months, or possibly longer?
Many thanks,
John Hassett.

You haven't been overcharged. That is how it works with all these companies.
You sign up to a package for a certain price. Later on when they revise their prices and offerings, unless you specifically ask them to change packages, you are going to carry on with the package and price that you agreed to.0 -

You appear to have a BT phone and Virgin BB. The £17.50 price for 50mb BB is only for those people who also have a Virgin phone line. The price for Virgin BB alone is £28.50 which is what you're paying albeit for the lower speed. So I am going to use the MSE advice to try and negotiate a better deal, including a phone. If you're now going to include a Virgin phone you'll have no problem getting £17.50 for BB plus £16.99 for line rental making it £34.49pm. You may of course try for less. Also, does anyone know if there is a way I can claim back the money I have been overcharged for months, or possibly longer?
You've not been overcharged as £28.50 is the correct price for standalone BB with Virgin. Their starting speed is 50mb now as opposed to 20mb so you could have asked for that.0 -
Thank you to all for that clarification. Much appreciated.0
