Undoubtedly not, but maybe Barclays have made a business decision to not provide accounts to PEP's or ones with certain other circumstances as it's safer to just not bother, and then probably easier to just say no with a vague reference to "the law" and wash their hands of the application than provide specifics.

That seems rather unlikely, particularly in this case where the OP says they already have a Barclays account.

But if you look at the list of those who qualify as being a PEP it's highly unlikely that the OP actually is one - in fact, it could even be argued that the fact that he has a Barclays account already is evidence that he is not a PEP.

Which reinforces the argument that the PEP 'explanation' is unlikely and therefore irrelevant to the OP's situation.

I got this same error when I applied for a Barclays account a couple of months ago. I assumed it was because I failed their identity check when they asked me all the Experian questions about 'which account did you open in March 2015' etc, when I had opened several in that month for example, so did have to guess a couple.

Applied with the same details the next month and knew I'd answered their questions correctly (different ones, less ambiguous this time), and all went through fine.
  • Thanks for all of your suggestions. I went in to the branch, they had no clue, nor could they help.....i placed a complaint and waiting for them to so some 'background' research. Ill let you know gow it goes.
  • Barclays have just reconfirmed they are still investigating it and should be able to comment by Sept 28. At least they are looking.....
