Actually, what I was thinking was, get a smallish laptop (with the required full MS Office), then pop into somewhere like Cash Converters/Generator and pick up a used monitor, add on a wireless (or even Bluetooth) keyboard and mouse, and, hey presto, you've got a combined home and travel computer.0

I would check with the school whether they offer a Microsoft Office 365 Education plan, which could give online access to Office programmes free or allow them to be installed locally for a small monthly payment.

We picked up office from software for students relatively cheaply. We were able to load it onto 2 devices.

Office is Microsoft's cash cow.
The school may have an agreement with Microsoft for students to use it cheaply, but otherwise ifs going to be in the order of £100 as a one of payment to licence it for a copy, or £6 a month for the subscription version.
Try open office if that does what you want it will be free - https://www.openoffice.org/0 -

GJ,
can be had for even zero cost on five devices for the duration of attendance if the school is in the Microsoft Education Programme, check with school.
