New computer and printer

Would like some help finding a reasonably priced computer and printer, basically I need it for my teenagers to be able to type word documents, power points etc and print for school. My eldest has an Apple Mac but youngest only has a hudl, I have an I pad and at the moment we use my old Acer (screen broken) plugged into TV and then plug in the printer.
I have no idea where to start as I feel we only need the basics but there is so much out there.
My budget, not much I'm afraid, can I get something for a couple of hundred pounds??

Not sure about the computer (MS Office will be the tricky one. Could she manage with a free alternative, like Open Office?), but as far as printers are concerned, there are some really cheap mono lasers about.

I've got the Brother HL-1112, currently selling for £39-99 at Argos.

Not terrifically fast, and the cartridges only do ~ 1,000 pages, but compatibles are available from Amazon @ £17-48 for two, including delivery.

Thanks Bob, he is a she. I noticed with my Acer that I had to download open office and I couldn't get power point no matter how much I tried. Do you have to buy Microsoft office separately then??

    Generally speaking, yes.

Some small screen devices come with full versions of MS Office (My Medion Akoya 10.1" laptop came with a full version of Office 2013), but most full size computers come with, at best, a trial version (usually lasting about 30 days), after which you would need to pay for a licence.

So I am no further forward then, I feel she really does need word or similar and power point. Or just contact school and tell them we can only afford paper and pens:D

  • Could you go the way of a small laptop, plugged into a monitor, external keyboard and mouse?

I got office cheap off eBay for my new computer - worked fine. You don't need to pay silly money for it.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

OpenOffice / LibreOffice has Writer, Calc, and Impress, which are the equivalents of Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.

It has actually been ported to Android, so you could try using the Hudl plugged into a larger screen and with a bluetooth or usb keyboard.

Morgan have refurbished computers and laptops from about £120.
