    What exactly 'above'?
My guess is that the process is different for different customers.
For me it's 8 digits ID like in the video, but the remaining part is different:

Above as in the post by eskbanker.

Santander changed their login process at some point.

I have two different logins one recent and one a legacy from Alliance and Leicester.
    They require different information.

The video on their site is what is required for recently opened accounts.

How come it's "16-digit number on debit card" for the OP then? Red herring?

Because at the time the OP signed up for online banking that was what was required.
For anyone that signs up now a personal ID of 10 digits is allocated.
A 5 digit PIN of the users choice and then a password also chosen at registration.

My old login which still works is a 8 digit ID followed by a 4 digit PIN no password.

Mine is 16 digit number on cash card (a relic from the old Abbey National days)
after which I get the image screen

then passcode = 12 letters chosen by me
and registration number = 5 digits chosen by me

Rather than calling the expensive number, replace 0845 with 0345.

From 26 October 2015, financial services are no longer permitted to use 084, 087 or 09 numbers for contact from existing customers.
