If they really expect you to do 35 hours work a week, then why isn't JSA the equivalent of 35 hours minimum wage? If you only get £60-ish, then surely you should only need to do about 8-9 hours work :)

Yes, but that doesn't punish you does it.
  • Its so people think to themselves ''oh its not worth the £70 per week'' Ill just manage until I get something... Those who need it - punishes them for being poor

Someone mentioned a smart phone app that applies for all vacancies that fit set parameters and thus registers them on your files.
Dont know much more about it other than that.
I do Contracts, all day every day.

As long as they can see you're making proper effort, I don;t think JCP will be wanting (able to? resources? DPA?) install a webcam in your home, to check what you are up to, all day!

They told me that if they thought you weren't putting any effort into your jobsearch you could be called into the JS every day and sit there in front of them doing searches for 30hrs a week.

Excellent; let them provide the computer, electricity, heating, desk, paper, ink, newspapers, stamps, etc.

Obviously in a private office for each jobseeker as they have to maintain confidentiality of each claimant.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • I was on UC briefly last year and I would just say things took longer than they actually did. I also told by advisor that volunteering and courses count towards the 35 hours; I was volunteering at the time so I put that down.

I agree it's not sensible - but if it really takes you an hour to apply for 5-10 jobs, then you really aren't tailoring your CVs and covering letters enough. :)

It's great that you have several versions to use, but even with a fully up to date CV, it would take me at least 30 minutes to create a covering letter that plays to all the 'essential' points in each JD, and to change individual words on the most relevant version of my CV so that they read it and think I match their job entirely. Just a suggestion, but that may be why you're being turned down. With so many people applying for jobs (obviously depends on your sector and industry, I appreciate that), your CV and letter have to be worked on so that they're better than 'good'. Gone are the days when you just had to be good enough to get an interview then prove yourself then (mostly!)!
' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

It might only take less than an hour to write a good covering letter, and to select one of the dozen or so 'tailored' CVs stored on your computer that is suitable for a particular job ... But that's because you are efficient.

Put yourself into the mindset of someone who isn't efficient, who can't write good covering letters without 27 re-writes, who doesn't think about keeping the CV they tailored last week. It'd probably take that someone between four and six hours to finish the same letter of application. Record their times, not yours ;)
