How to fit a bolt on a door thats not even?

Trying to stop people getting into my bedroom basically. Having a hard time trying to figure out how to lock it from the outside.
I have bought some bolts and now just need some padlocks. Then I realised the door frame is hollow after I put a screw in it and the screw just basically pulled straight out, the wood was so thin it was ridiculous in the door frame.
Must be a good way of doing it. I was looking at the link for the Master Lock Hasp & Staple for Angles 160mm, but that looked really complex. Was thinking of the idea of a block of wood to even the door frame with the door but the shape of the door frame is like steps so the bolt would not reach.
Wonder what Bedsit Bob linked too?0 -
There are rawl plugs made for hollow doors, we've found then useful for putting a sliding bolt on our hollow bathroom door and they've been solid for three years now.

Thanks Sarah, I have found the solid part on the door, but because the doors not level with the frame I am going to have to drill a hole into the door frame for the bolt to slot into. The problem I am trying to solve is that the place in the door frame where I will put the hole for the bolt to side into is hollow.0 -
Buy a lock that has a flat plate for the other side, and fix that to the door frame using hollow rawls.

You'd need to find one suitable for a padlock of course, but there are many types of flat plate locks available.0 -
Here is a pictures of my door if thats any help

theres about two inches from the door to the next flat part of the door frame, it has 3 kind of steps before it reaches the flat part of the wall. If you see those 4 holes around the door frame, they are totally hollow there, the screws just pulled out, so if the bolt was to slide in there as the wood is totally hollow, like 1cm thick, even if someone with normal force opened the door the door would just open. Obvoiusly the bolt would not fit into the rawl plug.
The item you linked too I dont know if the bolt would reach to the flat soild part of the wall.
I put that metal loop on the flat part of the wall as thats the only solid part of wood. I put that there as I thought I would tie a padlock cable
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00DG2TNB6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00
though the loop and around the door handle but that didn't work at all as you can not control the length of the padlock cable and it was easy for someone to just untie the cable around the door handle.
Im not sure what else to try.0 -
In all seriousness - install a mortice lock - if you can get hold of a drill, flat wood bits and a half inch chisel and mallet you can change the lock and make it bullet proof (take that last bit with a pinch of salt, but you know what I mean )

Your best bet the is to use what Colin in post 4 suggested. This. http://m.screwfix.com/p/master-lock-hasp-staple-for-angles-160mm/44993
It is designed to go around corners so one bit goes on the door and you can probably use the hasp that is there. On the door facing.0 -
Apparently, my link didn't work
Anyway, this is something like what I was suggesting.

Only requires two holes drilling in the door (one through the edge, and one through the door itself) and maybe a little letting in, for the striker plate.0 -

Thanks for the replies. Is it easy to replace the door handles with lockable door handles? such as one like this

Heres a picture of my door/handle

I was looking at this item
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Satin-Brushed-Stainless-Steel-Door-Knob-Handle-Entrance-Key-Lock-Locking-Latch-/290846893861
It says on the description "is locked inside with a Thumbturn so keys are not required in case of emergency exit."
Does that mean its only able to be locked on one side? and is only able to be locked on the inside of the room? Where as I need it to be locked from the outside of the room.
Also when it says that keys are not required in case of an emergency, does that mean that if I can lock it from the outside of the room, someone can just easily open it without keys?
Also what would be the best thing to put in the holes that you can see on my picture to cover up the holes do you think?0
