Hello all
I am wanting to fit a bolt to the outside of my bedroom door with a bolt like this one

and then put a padlock though it to keep it locked.
however, the door is not even with the door frame, door frame is a good 2 inches I would say away from when the door is closed. So does anyone have any ideas how I can do this?
Or any other ideas how I can lock the door from the outside. I have thought about fitting a new door handle with a lock, but honestly I really am no good at DIY and wouldn't be able to do that, so just looking for something nice a simple really to lock a door from the outside. Can anyone think of anything?
Hope someone can help?

Just drill a matching sized hole in the frame for the bolt to slide into.

Or put a piece of wood behind the bolt to pack it out away from the door so the bolt then sits level with the frame.
Also the bolt you show will not take a padlock you need one like this or similar.

or fit a hasp like this one which has a small amount of movement to allow for differences between frame and door

Thanks for the replies all.
I may just try drilling a hole into the door frame for the bolt to slide into as that seems the easiest way to do it. Don't think there will be any cables in the door frame.
I obviously need to buy a boltlock which will allow me to fit a padlock though, so one like the one you put a link to. Now does it matter what size padlock I will buy to put though the blocklock?0 -
I also am worried as the door is hollow? what are my options?0

Even hollow doors have a solid block where the handle goes to allow for secure fixing of handle and lock. Just fit the bolt as close to yhe handle as you can and you should be able to screw into this block.
If your house is rented, make sure you are ok with the landlord to do this.

Thanks, you were right, the door has a block of wood in it where the door knob is. THe only problem now is the part where the bolt will slide into on the door frame is hollow. Do you think it will be ok? Or any other ideas?0

Are you trying to stop people getting into your bedroom or are you trying to put people off getting into it. If the latter then no problem with the bit being hollow. If the former then you should be looking at putting in a solid wooden door and a proper bolt with a massive padlock.0

How about one of these.

It fits in the middle of the edge of the door, and the bolt throws into the door frame, so it doesn't matter if the door isn't flush with the frame.0 -
