Could have been a national firm who had items on the van at the ready and no compatible parts to suit but are paid day rate or price work, They may have also believed it was fixed okay and a leak started a few days after, In any event the neighbour is being difficult so in my view silicone it and be job done.[/QUOTE]

Fair comment, but if so, it is OP's fault for taking on day rate or price work and a national supplier. This concept is the scourge of the "home improvement" industry. Then those involved trot it out as an excuse as if this justifies a sorry situation.

Silicone is the universal cure all to cover all manner of things. What if the neighbour does not accept this? What if it starts leaking again in a week or two? What if it is black gutter subject to excessive heat expansion that keeps causing failure of the silicone ?

If the neighbour has knowledge and recognises national contractors on day rate or price work then they might say "f--k off with your bodges - do the job properly".

In mitigation you might say that I am having a rant. Perhaps I am because today I have walked away from a fascia and gutter job installed by Dunraven. This takes cowboy installation plummeting to new depths and I am at a loss for words. I pity the customer who has paid good money to have their home butchered.

My tuppences worth - get up with a ladder - DON'T use silicone, use a proprietary gutter sealant which will stay 'wet' and will accommodate the movement/flexibility that silicone wont.
