if you don't want emails 'on the move' then simply don't set up any email accounts on the smartphone.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Many thanks for all the useful replies! I'm afraid I've chickened out this time round and gone for another non-smart Nokia from E-Bay. I have warned myself, though, that this is the last time: once this one collapses, it's smartphone-without-the-emails time.

I can't imagine getting much better than £5 per month for 100 minutes + 300 texts, plus for some strange reason I get extra minutes any time someone phones me! :j

They have useful bundles at some prices, though as grumbler pointed out you can find more at the same £5.

But if your use is typically a bit below the bundle size, say 60 or 80 minutes and 50 or 100 texts a month, then simple (no bundle) pay as you go from Three or Delight will be cheaper.

I see you've now made a decision on a phone. But don't completely count out a smartphone for the future. You might grow into using it a bit more. Apart from maybe occasional map use or a couple of useful website visits like train times or to look up phone numbers, there are applications that help you make cheaper or even free phone calls and texts.

Thanks for that, redux - I feel certain that next time I'll have to get modern and go smartphone!

I didn't mention it earlier, btw, but one reason I particularly like Giffgaff is that where I work mobile signals are generally poor: I was previously with the appalling Vodafone and was so delighted when I got shot of them for all sorts of reasons, including the fact that my Giffgaff signal (via O2 of course) is a vast improvement! Plus I also like the peculiar fact that I get extra minutes added on if someone phones me!

I bought a very basic Sony Experia E phone to replace my much loved Nokia slide phone (which I lost:(. ) It is on a 3G COMBI SIM only plan with EE (then Orange) which cost £8 month when I took it out around 18 months ago.

Like you I NEVER send or receive or sync my emails on it and I have turned off everything you can turn off, off (wifi, mobile networks etc). The camera on the phone is pants but I have a separate Samsung smart camera anyway. On the other hand it has excellent battery life.

I did install a what's the weather app and a where's the bus app but I never use them. I basically just use the Sony phone for calls and texts and to text the occasional photo. My SIM only plan included free Orange to Orange calls, 500 mins, 500 texts, 100mb data. It has proved fine for my needs but you can of course get other packages with more capacity including for example unlimited texts and/or more data.
