Metacam natural alternatives

Are there any alternative (natural ?) remedies - rather than Metacam ?
Our cat is 13 years old and has been prescribed Metacam by the vet for arthritis of his back legs
He has changed his personality - since the drug was started - getting exceedingly clingy to his mum and also hissing at me (his dad) - he won't settle at all (when in - he wants to go outdoors and then he comes straight back in through the cat flap again) - wanting food all of the time as well.....
He had his Throid gland removed - surgically - 18 months ago.

I would look at golden paste, a natural supplement you make using turmeric, coconut oil and pepper. It's a powerful anti-inflammatory, I know people have often managed to taper out Metacam and just give the golden paste (several small doses throughout the day, as it's only in the body for a few hours)
There's a Facebook group "Turmeric User Group" with more info0 -
If he's very unsettled and eating a lot without weight gain he may need his thyroid levels checked0

The changes you describe probably warrant another visit to the vet, certainly before changing/stopping any medications yourself.0

I use tumeric for my Labrador as its a natural antiinflamitory and it's amazing.
He had a shoulde injury and long walks were making him limp or stiff so a teaspoon over his dinner once a day (gradually built it up over a few days) first day he sniffed and wasn't sure then ate it no bother since. Also give him a cap of glucosamine and chrondrotin daily.
Was told it would take 4-6 weeks to notice a difference but after 3weeks was a noticeable defence and 5weeks later he's running about beaches for hours and no stiffness and limping later or next day. It's fantastic.
BUT I started giving him it when he was limping and was told he would develop arthritis he's been on it maybe 2+ years and I know people who give it who's dogs have low h and elbow scores or hip and or elbow displasia, not sure how quick to go about reducing metacam to make sure your cat isn't in pain. Have a chat to your vet about it too, some vets like mines are great, or even if you havea. Few at the practice speak to a few of them or contact another to get their input?0 -

Krlyr, please could you refresh my memory as to how to make up the golden paste?
Or whether I can buy it as a supplement and where? Thanks krlyr0 -

I don't know if it's available for cats but my arthritic dog has Cartrophen injections a few times a year, it's much longer lasting and doesn't have the side effects of Metacam (in his case explosive diarrhoea).
I still haven't given golden paste a proper chance but have found that switching him to a raw diet and adding salmon oil and coconut oil has made a huge difference, he normally would have needed two courses of Cartrophen for his pain by this time in the year but he's been raw since Feb with the oils since last year and apart from an occasional painful day he has been much more mobile and isn't suffering anywhere near as much as before.0 -
Turmeric for cats - you have to be joking !!
Our cat won't go anywhere near any different (normal) cat food, other than his normal brand - so why should he eat Turmeric ?
Sorry but this won't work !!0 -
How did the vet appointment go?0
