Help, I am quite new to selling on ebay and the winning bidder of an item I sent out 1st class on friday is saying that he hasn't received the item yet. The strange thing is that others I sent out that day and they have been received. What do I do?

Don't panic yet as post can be horribly slow.
Assuming you have a certificate of posting (COP) ask the buyer to wait a little longer to see if the item will turn up, if possible stalll him for a couple of weeks but come back here and ask for more advice if the tone of his emails changes.
If after 15 days have elapsed the item still hasn't turned up start the claim from the post office. Yoiu can either get the claim form over the counter or print one off from https://www.royalmail.co.uk . You need to send that claim form together with the COP and a copy of the ebay invoice showing the total plus postage in support of the claim.
I would normally refund the buyer after two weeks (possibly three weeks if I can stall them a little) and not wait for the claim to be processed.
If however the buyer paid by paypal he can start a chargeback claim against you as quickly as 7 days , so just keep an eye on the situation and be reassuring to your buyer.

oops, i never got a certificate of postage. Is it worth just sending him another item (it was only a sim card) recorded just in case he is trying to scam me? Or just offer to refund him? It wasn't that much money anyway, so it maybe better to do this rather than another one and recorded delivery costs.
Will definately be getting cop in future.0 -
I would still wait to see if it turns up , like Soolin says just stall a bit. A lot of times things turn up, so say to wait the 15 days as thats what the Po advises and if it does not turn up then refund. Different areas can have slightly different posting times . And in the fututre get a COP , they are essental when you are selling, I have had about £ 90 claims this year so far with them. A lot of money to lose personally, fortunatly this time it has not been a lot of money for you.0

You cannot beat posting everything out by recorded delivery(at the end of the day people know that it is included on top of normal postage at 66p) I have been caught out once and the COP was useless. I still get people trying it on and i have had a copy of their signature sitting in front of me! :rolleyes:skye wrote:oops, i never got a certificate of postage. Update - the guy has now left me positive feedback saying that the item arrived in good time!! However I also received an e-mail off him today at 11:30 stating that he still hadn't received it in todays post!! I have e-mailed him back asking him to confirm that that he has received the item as he has left positive feedback, but have had no reply as yet. Will wait and see what happens...0

hehehehe what time did he leave the feedback? not that I'm suggesting he was trying it on...and perhaps forgot who he was trying it on with......:D well your worries are over now that you have a positive feedback. If you learn any lesson from this it's that you do need to ensure that you have at least obtained a certificate of posting - or better still send by recorded delivery and just add the extra postage costs in your listing postal charges. This will cut down on items not arriving and if any do get lost you're covered for any losses up to £28 I think.
Glad this is a happy ending:money:0 -
Ok I am really confused now, the guy has e-mailed me saying that he has received a card from the post office saying he needs to pay £1.05 something about the postage. He said he would let me know when the package arrives if it is the sim card. I only put a first class stamp on for the sim card pack, but i haven't had anyone else complaining about excess fees. He still hasn't answered my e-mail asking why he has put positive feedback and just answered about the postage and another one saying I have told you so many times I haven't received the item. What do I do now?0

Wait until he gets it and see what he says, also if you've got another at home weigh it and check how much it will cost on the www.royalmail.com website if it's an O2 one will probably cost more than 1 stamp. Royal Mail will be ripping you off by asking an extra £1.50, has happened to me in the past.2p off is still 2p off!0

The limit for 1st class mail is quite light, only 60 grammes so if it was only slightly over that then you put insufficient postage on the letter and will have to refund the buyer his £1.05.
Maybe you have just been lucky in the past and the post office has not picked up the fact the letter is overweight?
SOrry if this sounds grumpy, but you really need to take every precaution when selling on ebay. Guessing the weight of something and not getting a COP will lead to problems in the future. Get in the habit of taking every thing to the post office.

I don't think Royal Mail are rripping anyone off here. The £1.05 will be both the extra postage required and the handling charge as clearly outlined on the Royal Mail website.
