Hi Folks, hope someone can give me some advice. I have a sony vaio which I have had a few years now but it had started to go really slow, jump etc. I decided to back everything up and reformat it as it had never been done, expecting it to be a wizz when it was all finished............Wrong!!! It is still as bad as ever, really slow, jumping all the time, I feel like throwing it at the wall. I thought if it was taken back to factory settings it would be good to go? Any ideas? I have downloaded the AVG free and I think Mcaffe is still working (it was pre installed from the discs.) Any help appriciated x

What version of Windows have you got on it?0

What Win OS is it ?
Do the fans run all the time ? Could be CPU downclocking due to blocked air ducts.
Run a chkdsk.
Run a manual defragScience isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -

what procedure did you use to do a factory restore, what are these discs?
does safe mode exhibit the same problem
what is jumping, the touchpad?
which video card is installed, is the machine overly warm
remove avg and mcafee, then see how it operates
don't waste any time defragging
what's windows update upto?Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0 -

it's never the cause or the cure, and it's just been re-installed, so fragmentation will be minimal.Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0

Thank you for all your help and advice, I have just redone it again, I used the recovery discs that came with the laptop (it was a 2nd hand laptop so I guess they dowloaded the recovery discs) It seems to be ok for the time being, I havent installed AVG again and will hang back on that in case it was that causing the problem. When I bought the laptop it had windows 7 installed but the recovery disks have installed windows vista (would that be a problem?)0

Oh dear. Vista preceded 7 and, although it works once fully patched and tweaked, its a backwards step. Did you have a backup of 7 OR any Windows7 license sticker anywhere? When I bought the laptop it had windows 7 installed but the recovery disks have installed windows vista (would that be a problem?)0 -
I did a full back up, would that just back up my information? Sorry as you can tell, im not very techie minded :-(0
