in Cutting tax
Hi - would appreciate any help on this matter...
My new employer is asking me to send wage slips from my last employer to their accountant as the accountant was confused by the details on the P45. I don't know exactly why yet as I've not yet spoken to them but I am hazarding a guess.
On Part 1a box 7 it asks for total pay to date (which I assume is for that tax year).
On Part 1a box 8 it asks for total pay in this employment and to to leave the box blank if it is the same as the totals in box 7 - it has been left blank.
What I'd like to know is box 8 for the total earnings from THE ENTIRE employment OR the total earnings for THE CURRENT TAX YEAR?
Basically I started in December 2014 and earned £4000 by end of that tax year. Since the start of this tax year I had earned another £4000 at the time of leaving. So all in I have earned £8000 since December 2014. Am I meant to see this amount - £8000 on my P45 or latest wageslip somewhere?
Many thanks for any advice on this....

There is a mathematical coreolation between gross pay, tax deducted and date of leaving. This is checked when the P45 is entered onto the new employers wages system and is probably what is causing the problem.
All figures are for the current tax year to date and this was your only job since 6 April 2015. From what you say £8000 should appear on your P45.
If you have any other queries please provide tax code, especially anything after the first letter and you date of leaving. The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
P45 only show whats been paid and deducted in the current tax year. If your not on a week1/month 1 tax code section 8 will be blank.
I think the accountant doesn't know what he's looking at!0 -
The OP seems confused about tax years and calendar years.
OP, the previous tax year ran from 6 April 2014 to 5 April 2015.
Were you working for the same employer between those dates?0 -
If you have had only the one employer from 6 April 2015 up to leaving then box 8 would be blank.
Your new employer should not even know what is in box 8 unless you gave them the part 1A which you are supposed to keep and which should be returned to you if you did hand it in. Parts 2 and 3 of the P45 only have details up to item 7.0 -

4,000 should be your earning to date in this employment as this is your earning to date since 6th April 2015
what is the tax to date and the taxcode?0 -
Tax code from april 2015 1060L
So on p45 where it says total earnings in this employment in box 8 - this should be what I have earned in this tax year from April 2015 to July 2015 - £4k (not total earnings since employment began in December) which would have been £8k))...?0 -

what is the tax to date and the taxcode?[/QUOTE
1060L
box 7 - total pay to date 4000
total tax to date 147
box 8 - total pay in this employment - left blank (assumed as same as above)
total tax - left blank (assumed as same as above)
I think I misunderstood the box 8 'total pay in this employment' as meaning the entire employment from when I started the job0 -

What is the week or month number on the P45 looks to me to be for week 16?
Have just checked and figures are spot on for week 160 -
What relevance is the part 1A to the new employer? This part of the P45 was introduced at the onset of self-assessment in order that the taxpayer had a record of each employment in the tax year for separate inclusion on the annual tax return- no other reason. That is why, at box 8, it uses the word 'this employment'.
There is a reason why the box numbers only go up to 7 on the parts 2 and 3 - the employer does not require any additional information. There are 10 types of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who do not. :doh:0
